IN SHORT
|
This summer, Spain is facing a massive influx of tourists breaking all records. This situation raises questions about the country’s capacity to welcome so many visitors. Should we fear this tourist wave or can we take full advantage of it?
An unprecedented tourist influx this summer #
According to the latest estimates from Turespaña, Spain could host a record number of 41 million foreign tourists during the summer period. This significant increase (+13% compared to summer 2023) rekindles tensions among residents, especially in already overloaded regions. L’increase in revenue linked to tourism, expected at 59 billion euros, confirms the success of the Spanish tourism model according to the Minister of Tourism, Jordi Hereu.
The areas most impacted by overtourism #
Forecasts indicate that the Basque Country, Andalusia and Madrid will be particularly affected, with attendance increases ranging from 7.4% to 11.5%. Consequently, the protests against the overtourism are increasing, particularly in Barcelona, where thousands of demonstrators are demanding urgent measures. The main concerns include noise pollution, pollution, and infrastructure congestion.
Economic benefits on the rise but at what cost? #
THE economic data are promising: Spain’s tourism gross domestic product could exceed 200 billion euros this year, contributing to 13.2% of the national economy. However, this economic prosperity should not overshadow the negative effects mass tourism, even recognized by the authorities.
Measures taken to curb the problem #
To respond to criticism, several regions, like Barcelona, are taking drastic measures. The city thus announced the ban on tourist apartment rentals by 2029 to make housing more accessible to residents. The government is also working to establish a register of tourist accommodation to better combat illegal rental, planned for March or April 2025.
