The trip back from vacation can quickly turn into a real ordeal for teenagers when the air conditioning in their coach breaks down in the middle of summer. This was the case for a group of 42 Belgian teenagers, returning from Spain, whose journey was abruptly interrupted at the Leclerc service station, located in the commune of Bosc. The lack of air conditioning caused distress and discomfort among the young passengers.
Extreme travel conditions #
On board the coach, the sudden absence of air conditioning quickly caused the interior temperature to rise. Stuck in this white-hot vehicle, the teenagers began to feel the effects of the heat stroke. Thirteen of them developed serious nausea and headache severe, requiring emergency intervention by emergency services.
Emergency response #
Hérault firefighters quickly arrived on the scene to assess the situation. Among the 42 adolescents, nine had to be urgently evacuated to the Lapeyronie University Hospital in Montpellier to receive adequate care. The other young people, as well as the four leaders and the two drivers, were taken care of on site.
Collective care #
While waiting for a replacement bus to arrive, the teenagers and accompanying adults were temporarily relocated to the school group of the commune of Bosc. Deploying a great outpouring of solidarity, the city hall and the Red Cross helped ensure their comfort and safety throughout the night.
