IN BRIEF
|
After proving their worth in Hanoi, metros are making their way to Ho Chi Minh City, formerly known as Saigon, with the inauguration of Line 1. This new mode of transport, which winds above and below ground for nearly 20 kilometers, reveals itself as a hope in the battle against the chronic congestion of this vast metropolis. With fourteen stations linking Ben Thanh market to the Suoi Tien amusement park, this innovation promises to transform the travel of residents and tourists in this vibrant city at the heart of Vietnam.
After launching in Hanoi a few years ago, it is now Ho Chi Minh City’s turn, once known as Saigon, to welcome its very first metro. This ambitious project, which required a decade of construction, is finally a reality. Nevertheless, some question its effectiveness in solving the chronic traffic problems that plague this large metropolis in southern Vietnam.

A line inaugurated with enthusiasm #
The construction of the metro lasted over ten years, but the wait was worth it! The Line 1 of the Ho Chi Minh City metro was put into service at the beginning of the year. This line, an unexpected mix of metro and suburban train, spans approximately 20 kilometers. It connects fourteen stations that will take you from the famous Ben Thanh market, recognizable by its typical architecture, to the Suoi Tien amusement park, all for less than one euro per ride. What a great way to avoid the city’s legendary traffic jams!
Traffic jams still an issue #
Despite the arrival of the metro, traffic in Ho Chi Minh City remains a real challenge. With nearly 10 million inhabitants and about 4 million motorcycles pouring into the streets, the anxiety of traffic jams is far from dissipated. Residents continue to navigate the chaotic arteries of the city, juggling scooters, turn signals, and honking horns. It seems like a modern dance of harmony and despair!
A variety of transport options #
Transportation options in Ho Chi Minh City are not limited to the metro. Public buses, for example, provide an economical but often confusing alternative for foreigners. Schedules and routes can be bewildering, despite the availability of apps to help navigate this jungle of journeys. However, they remain the most accessible option, even if their slowness can sometimes lead to impatience.
Tourist buses for exploring
For those who prefer comfort, tourist buses also operate in the city. These “Hop-on Hop-off” vehicles offer a more enjoyable way to discover the main sites while avoiding the stress of urban transport. Of course, their fare is slightly higher than that of public buses, but the views are worth it.

The water bus experience
For a unique experience, why not try the water buses? These vessels connect downtown to the northern suburbs, gliding peacefully along the river and offering a spectacular panoramic view of Ho Chi Minh City. Designed primarily for tourists, these trips resemble small cruises more than everyday commuting.
Taxis and motorbike taxis
Using a taxi is undoubtedly the easiest way to get around. Ubiquitous in the streets, taxis provide an affordable option for tourists, especially if you choose reputable major companies. While it is recommended to agree on the fare before each trip, apps are available to check prices, making rides more transparent.
Finally, don’t miss the chance to take a ride with motorbike taxis, or “Xe Ôm”. These cheerful companions slip through traffic with ease and take you wherever you want, provided you agree on the price. A true urban adventure that will please thrill-seekers!
