When we contacted them, Natalie, her husband and their 8-year-old son were in the middle of a nap and reading session on Síkinos, a tiny island in the Cyclades. This island, with its less than 300 inhabitants, constitutes a true haven of peace. Natalie says: “There is a beautiful monastery here that we loved visiting. Coming here means soaking up the heritage and finding calm, far from the parties and the hustle and bustle.”

Despite the scorching temperatures and fires in series, Natalie’s family continues to be seduced by this piece of paradise. “It’s over 30°C, so we avoid hiking during the day. Between 12 p.m. and 4 p.m., it’s time to let go,” adds Natalie, a consultant specializing in crisis management.
Managing climate and tourism challenges #
Greece, with its 32.7 million tourists registered in 2023, faces growing problems of overtourism. This massive influx could discourage some, but not the most passionate. Natalie says: “We chose a small, unspoiled island to avoid the crowds. Even in high season, Síkinos only welcomes a small number of tourists.”
Less frequented alternatives #
Claire, 47, planned to rent a catamaran to explore the Saronic Islands with family and friends. This choice allows them to visit less frequented places like Poros and Hydra. “We spoke with an Athenian who recommended these islands to us, which are less invaded by tourists in summer,” explains Claire.
Their flexible itinerary will allow them to adapt to climatic and crowd conditions. “The catamaran gives us the autonomy to change our plans at the last minute if necessary,” she says.
Favor roaming and less popular destinations #
Bénédicte, 53, opts for a road trip by car with her family in the Peloponnese. “We want to avoid areas that are too touristy. Often, you just need to move a few streets away to find peace,” she shares. Despite the rise in prices, Bénédicte believes that costs remain attractive compared to France.
“ Since we are on a road trip by car, we can stop at a beach where there is no one. We plan to always be five minutes from the sea or the swimming pool” Bénédicte, 53 years old
Unparalleled cultural and natural wealth #
The testimonies converge: Greece remains an irresistible destination. “There is sunshine, but also an unwavering love for culture, language and mythology,” explains Natalie. Bénédicte adds: “Children love discovering in real life what they learned at school about Greek mythology.”
In summary, Greece offers a perfect combination of natural beauty, historic sites and idyllic beaches, ignoring the problems of overpopulation or forest fires. The Hellenic National Tourist Office even predicts an increase in the number of French visitors in 2024, proof that the passion of the French for Greece is stronger than ever.
