New Caledonia is currently in the grip of a crisis situation which is causing concern among travel agencies. This popular tourist destination could see some stays compromised. Should you therefore consider canceling your vacation in this region?
Victor Dubois, specialist in tourism and geopolitics, sheds light on the current situation in New Caledonia. Faced with a reduction in flight schedules and the suspension of air services, travel agencies are going through a complicated period. These uncertainties generate significant financial losses and a desperate wait for public aid. What is it really?
Drastic reduction in flights #
Aircalin, New Caledonia’s main airline, recently announced a significant reduction in its rotations. Melbourne in Australia and Tokyo in Japan are no longer served. From September 1, a 50% drop in international air traffic is expected. Since May 13, the crisis has heavily affected this company, plunging travel agencies into a situation of uncertainty.
Travel agencies in difficulty #
Reservations are decreasing, cancellations are increasing and three Pacific companies have suspended their flights to or from New Caledonia. Faced with this context, travel agencies try to answer customers’ questions, although they do not always have the answers. Vaea Frogier, president of the travel agencies union, underlines the impact of this crisis on her agency, having had to lay off two of its five employees.

Desperate wait for public aid #
Travel agencies are suffering not only from a lack of visibility, but also from cumulative financial losses, and the much-hoped-for public aid has still not arrived. Foreign and metropolitan tourists are gradually deserting New Caledonia, further worsening the economic situation of tourism professionals.
Passenger behavior #
Another worrying phenomenon is emerging: the majority of international passengers departing from Nouméa la Tontouta only book one-way trips. This suggests uncertainty about the future or an intention to leave the territory permanently. The exact motives still remain unclear, but this adds an additional layer of complexity to managing this crisis.
What to do if you have already booked? #
Before making a decision regarding your vacation in New Caledonia, here are some tips:
- Stay informed about announcements from airlines and travel agencies.
- Contact your travel agents to discuss rescheduling or refund options.
- Check regularly for updates on travel restrictions and local regulations.
It is crucial to weigh the risks and make an informed decision based on the available information. Uncertainty reigns, but proper preparation can help you navigate this difficult time.
