Ready to embark on an extraordinary adventure? Catalonia, much more than just an extension of France, offers you a trip filled with discoveries, stunning landscapes, and a vibrant culture. From the sea to the mountains, from medieval villages to iconic historical sites, let yourself be carried away by this unforgettable 8-step journey that is sure to melt your heart!

Before you leave: the express checklist

Before hitting the road, some preparations are necessary for a worry-free journey. Perform a technical inspection of your vehicle, check your tires, brakes, and ensure that all lights are functioning smoothly. Also, consider choosing an appropriate car insurance, especially for a trip abroad. Don’t forget to bring a first-aid kit, a warning triangle, and a reflective vest. Download your GPS maps to avoid getting lost in blank areas. Finally, plan your stops while leaving room for the unexpected — because the magic of a road trip often lies in surprises!

Cadaquès, between sea and mountains

Start this road trip in the charming village of Cadaquès, a white gem clinging to the rocks. Perfect for strolling, its cobbled streets won Salvador Dali’s heart. Explore his house-museum in Portlligat, marvel at Cala Jugadora, then venture into the Cap de Creus Natural Park. Don’t forget to drive along the Cap de Creus road (GI-614) early in the morning: breathtaking landscapes await you before the crowds arrive.

Peratallada and Pals, medieval jewels

Next, head to the medieval villages of Peratallada and Pals, timeless gems. These flower-filled locales are ideal for a leisurely stroll. In Pals, climb the Tower of Hours and admire the panorama. Then in Peratallada, settle on a terrace and enjoy an aperitif with vermouth, accompanied by delicious pa amb tomaquet and local charcuteries. A true feast for the senses!

Calella de Palafrugell, dream coves

Then, head to Calella de Palafrugell, where the Mediterranean village reveals its colorful port. Soak in the surrounding beauty by taking the coastal Ronda path. For the adventurous, I recommend renting a kayak or stand-up paddleboard to explore coves that are difficult to access by land. Don’t leave without visiting the Cap Roig gardens, a slice of paradise offering breathtaking views.

Gerona, a journey through time

After the sea, the city of Girona awaits you. Less frequented than Barcelona but equally captivating, this city is distinguished by its majestic Gothic cathedral and the famous Eiffel bridge. Let yourself be carried away in the Jewish quarter, one of the best-preserved in Europe, where every alley tells the story of the Middle Ages. For the drive, take the route that crosses the Gavarres massif from La Bisbal d’Empordà: a real treat for the eyes!

Montserrat, mystical mountains

Now head to the Santa Maria de Montserrat Monastery, perched about an hour and a half from Girona. This mystical place, home to the Black Madonna, attracts visitors as much for its spiritual aspect as for its stunning landscapes. The BP-1121 road leading there is considered one of the most beautiful in Spain. For hiking enthusiasts, take the Sant Joan funicular and explore the trails offering a refreshing breath of fresh air.

Tarragona, immersion in Roman times

Continue your journey with a stop in Tarragona, an ancient Roman city listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. You will discover amphitheaters, forums, and other remains that tell of the grandeur of the Roman Empire. And if that seems a bit long for the younger ones, why not take a break at the famous Port Aventura theme park nearby? Everyone has their passion!

The Ebro Delta, rice fields and flamingos

End this road trip at one of my favorite places: the Ebro Delta. With its rice fields stretching as far as the eye can see and stunning landscapes, this place is a natural treasure. Don’t forget to admire the flamingos around the Tancada lagoon. And for food lovers, what could be better than tasting a paella made with local rice while enjoying a sunset on Trabucador beach?

Miravet, the charm of the countryside

To conclude this journey, stop at Miravet, a picturesque village overlooking the Ebro. Visit its Templar castle and stroll through the streets still preserved from mass tourism. Continue your peaceful drive along the Ebro, with its olive groves and lush landscapes, to wrap up your stay beautifully.
