Hundreds of baggage handlers and Red Handling Staff flight dispatch personnel are considering going on strike, and this could significantly disrupt your travel plans. Are cancellations on the horizon? #
This Easter weekend, which extends from Friday, April 18, to the morning of Tuesday, April 22, could be marked by major disruptions for passengers departing from Gatwick. The Unite union recently revealed that Red Handling employees are on strike due to disagreements over their pension schemes. Unite’s General Secretary, Sharon Graham, stated: “Workers are tired of Red Handling playing games with their retirement plans.”
Affected airlines #
Several major airlines could be impacted by these industrial actions, including Delta, TAP, Air Peace, and Norwegian Airlines. Passengers are therefore urged to arrive at the airport earlier than usual, as endless queues could build up at the check-in counters. Guy Anker, director at Compare the Market, points out that while airlines may offer rebookings or refunds, if the flight is canceled for reasons beyond their control, there may be no compensation. Some policies allow recovery of costs related to travel cancellations, but be cautious, as some specifically exclude strikes.
