IN BRIEF
|
Starting from May 1, 2025, a new rule introduced by a prominent low-cost airline will require that any delay in checking in baggage at the airport may cost travelers €100. This measure, aimed at enhancing punctuality, targets those traveling with checked baggage who arrive less than 40 minutes before their scheduled departure. This article details the conditions of this new policy, its implications for passengers, and the now essential paid options to avoid any inconvenience.
A strict measure to ensure punctuality
The leading airline in Europe by passenger numbers is introducing a notable change: starting May 1, any delay at the baggage drop-off desk will incur a penalty of €100. This penalty applies to any passenger who misses the 40-minute cut-off before their flight’s scheduled departure while traveling with checked baggage. This measure aims to streamline the organization and loading of baggage, ensuring the punctuality of the airline’s 3,000 daily flights on the continent.
“Missed departure fee”: who is affected?
The new system of “missed departure fee” only affects travelers who, due to failing to meet the imposed deadline, are denied boarding. To board another flight, payment of €100 is mandatory, in addition to the cost of a new reservation, as these passengers are considered no-shows for the initial departure. This provision is part of the effort to combat delays caused by passengers arriving late at the baggage drop-off desk.
Increasing paid options
This new policy adds to the long list of paid options that characterize the experience with this low-cost carrier. For instance, checking in baggage at the desk already incurs a surcharge of €55, while the operation is completely free online. This “a la carte” model is further accelerated by the scheduled phasing out of paper boarding passes, set for November 3, 2025. Travelers will thus be required to print their boarding passes at home or use their smartphones.
Strict rules for boarding access
Meeting the schedule has now become essential for any passenger wishing to board. The airline requires presence at the boarding gate at least 30 minutes before departure, with boarding closing 20 minutes prior to the scheduled time. Failure to do so will result in denied access to the aircraft. Security checks or being far from the gate will not be accepted as justification for a delay; the responsibility rests entirely with the traveler.
Consequences for travelers’ choices
In light of this series of additional fees and mandatory options, travelers now need to anticipate every step of their airport journey. More broadly, delays at airports, whether in the United States or Europe, continue to impact the passenger experience. Additionally, numerous tips on adapting to flight delays have emerged, particularly for neurodivergent travelers, along with an increased focus on airlines’ obligations to their customers.

An evolution of low-cost travel
By further solidifying its strict pricing policy, the airline forces customers to maintain flawless organization. Failing to meet schedules and new rules can lead to additional costs, affecting the entire airport experience. For all those about to travel, it is essential to be aware of the new check-in practices to avoid incurring extra fees during their airport visit. It remains to be seen how much these measures will influence passenger behavior as air traffic continues to grow and transport delays continue to impact international travelers.
