An unexpected nighttime evacuation #

On the night of August 1st to 2nd, the Goélia Bleu Océane holiday residence, located in Carnac in Morbihan, experienced an unusual event to say the least. Because of a suspicious smell of chlorine emanating from the installations, the authorities took the decision to evacuate all the occupants. The circumstances aroused curiosity and concern among vacationers present on the scene.

THE chlorine vapors, known to be potentially harmful to health, prompted firefighters to intervene quickly to ensure the safety of residents. The evacuation concerned 111 people who were directed to a multipurpose room in the municipality to be brought to safety.

First aid reflexes #

Upon their arrival, 54 firefighters were mobilized to deal with the situation. According to testimony collected, a vacationer named Nathalie described the scene as “a flashing light on the balcony, people leaving the building.” The speed of the intervention and the effectiveness of the assistance were praised by the evacuees.

Source of odor identified #

After carrying out an inspection of the premises, the emergency services were able to locate the origin of this abnormal smell. They discovered two cans, of 20 liters each, left open in the swimming pool technical room. This allowed firefighters to determine that a sodium hypochlorite and one hydrochloric acid had mixed together, causing chemical compounds to leak into the air.

The rescue agents then carried out a neutralization products present on the ground and the extraction of remaining chemical substances in order to minimize the risks to the health of vacationers.

A gradual return to normal #

Around 3 a.m., after having airy the buildings and ensured the total security of the premises, the firefighters gave the green light for vacationers to return to their rooms. Although the incident was disturbing, the rapid and rigorous management of emergency services made it possible to avoid more serious complications.

This experience, although stressful for the occupants, highlights the importance of fast intervention and well orchestrated in the face of emergency situations. The residents, reassured, were able to spend the rest of their vacation without incident after this episode, which was memorable to say the least.
