As the 2024 Olympic Games dawn, the spotlight is on Paris and its emblematic monuments. But behind this flamboyant showcase, other cities like Lyon are preparing to experience an Olympic adventure while remaining away from popular excitement. It is a golden opportunity for the Rhone metropolis to shine in its own way, to show its know-how and to transport visitors into a whirlwind of culture, gastronomy and sport. In this less visible setting, Lyon promises to be a destination full of surprises, ready to combine the Olympic momentum with its warm authenticity.
A calm atmosphere during the Games #
While the Paris 2024 Olympic Games promise unprecedented excitement, Lyon, the capital of Gaul, seems to observe all this from afar. The city will, however, host a certain number of football matches, without however catching fire. Less movement in its streets, fewer festivities on the horizon, Lyon has opted for a quiet atmosphere on the sidelines of the major Olympic celebrations.
Some events to report #
Despite this peaceful atmosphere, the Lyon metropolis will not be completely cut off from the world event. Here is what is planned:

- Eleven football matches until August 9, including the men’s and women’s semi-finals on August 5 and 6.
- A meeting for the women’s bronze medal on August 9.
- Activities scheduled for the passage of the Paralympic flame from August 26 to 28.
These one-off events, however, are not enough to attract crowds, and this is a fact that Lyon does not seem to be trying to change.
A city little involved in the festivities #
While other cities are fighting to attract supporters and tourists, Lyon has decided not to install a large fan zone on Place Bellecour, an emblematic place in the city, where passion is usually at its height. Calm reigns supreme, traffic restrictions are minimal, and bars offer broadcasts of matches, but without the usual excitement of major sporting events.
Hotel offerings under the radar #
THE hotel sector de Lyon was not prepared for a rush of visitors. The city is traditionally popular for business tourism in the spring and fall, but it experiences a drop in summer attendance due to the heat. The hotels, far from being saturated, seem to be quietly waiting for visitors who might never arrive.
Capricious weather #
Heat also has its downsides. The risk of heat wave in Lyon complicates the summer experience a little more. High temperatures could deter those thinking of exploring the city during the Games period, particularly for fans traveling from far and wide. Even the weather does not favor an Olympic celebration which could have enlivened the city!

A different Olympic experience #
For those interested in Lyon, this year could offer a unique experience. Enjoying the matches while avoiding the crowds and discovering the charms of this historic city could prove to be an advantage. Lyon has other assets to offer: gastronomy, heritage and culture, all in a much more serene atmosphere. Perhaps for some the Games will turn into a delicious stroll through Lyon, far from the Olympic tumult.
