IN BRIEF
|
Summer 2024 marked a significant drop in the number of French holidaymakers, with only 65% of them taking the time to go on vacation. This phenomenon raises questions about the reasons why more and more French people are choosing to stay home during the beautiful season. Between the allure of the Olympic Games in Paris, erratic weather, and economic concerns, summer vacations seem to be losing their appeal.
Summer 2024 was marked by a concerning trend in the French tourism sector, with a significant decrease in the number of holidaymakers. According to the latest studies, only 65% of the French took vacations or extended weekends, a decrease of two points compared to the previous year. The cited reasons include both local politics, particularly erratic weather, and the allure of the Olympic Games in Paris, which captured the attention of a large number of people, encouraging them to stay home rather than travel.
The surveys speak for themselves #
In its latest report, Atout France indicates that this slight decrease in the number of holidaymakers can be attributed to several factors. Indeed, a tumultuous summer climate has led some to give up their initially planned projects. Furthermore, changes in the political and economic situation have also played a major role in this trend. The figures show a decrease in the departure rate in July, falling from 38% to 34%, while August also experienced a slight decrease, from 48% to 46%.
The French prefer to stay in France
Despite this decline, France remains the preferred destination for holidaymakers, with 89% of them choosing to spend their holidays on national territory. Beaches, mountains, and historic cities continue to attract the French who remain attached to their heritage. Stays at the sea, in the mountains, and in cities form the Top 3 of national holidaymakers’ favorite destinations. However, some also opt for nearby getaways, looking to minimize costs and maximize comfort during their vacations.

The Paris Olympics: a determining factor #
The Olympic Games in Paris, taking place in 2024, have had a considerable impact on the decisions of many French people. To follow this event dominating the global sports scene, some have preferred to forgo flying to distant destinations. These extended holidays have turned into opportunities to remain seated on their couches, captivated by the events and athletes in competition. A choice that could represent a new trend among French holidaymakers, eager to experience these historic moments live.
A climate at odds with expectations
The weather certainly played a key role in this dynamic. With persistent bad weather in July, which left many holidaymakers disappointed, the desire to escape somewhat faded. Unpromising weather forecasts even misled the most ardent sun and beach lovers. Consequently, the fear of not being able to fully enjoy the holidays led some to choose shorter stays or to give up traveling altogether.
Toward a promising late season? #
Yet, industry professionals remain hopeful. Despite this early summer, they anticipate a late season that could present better prospects. This could mean that the French are looking to compensate for missed holidays during the summer months with trips in the fall. The post-summer period could indeed prove beneficial for getaways, especially for those seeking to avoid crowds and enjoy more affordable rates.
