July 4, 2023 marks an unexpected turning point in the life of Lola Pourcel, an 18-year-old woman. While she was preparing to enjoy her vacation at the beach of Théoule with her grandparents, a dramatic event disrupted her routine: she rescued a man who was drowning. This heroic act will not only push her out of her comfort zone but will also lead her to discover her true calling in aquatic rescue.
A decisive moment on the beach #
On that sunny day, Lola was enjoying relaxing moments, surrounded by her loved ones. Laughter and jokes filled the air until calm turned into confusion. In an instant, she spots a distressed couple of Italians offshore. The husband, observing the fish, suddenly experiences fatigue that drags him to the bottom. Panic sets in as his wife screams for help, breaking the gentle sound of the waves.
Courage at the heart of the action #
Without thinking, Lola jumps into the water. Her heart races as she navigates through the waves. She manages to grab the man and, with unwavering determination, brings him back to the beach, ensuring his head stays above water. The moment is intense and filled with emotions, but her will to save a life takes precedence. Once back on the sand, she doesn’t stop there: a rescuer rushes to help revive the victim, while Lola, still in a hurry, goes to the woman, paralyzed by panic.
An unexpected training #
This significant intervention will have a lasting impact on Lola. After the incident, the French National Sea Rescue Society (SNSM) contacts her to congratulate her and offers her first aid training. Although she had never been in direct contact with the medical field and had concerns about blood, she dives into this experience with enthusiasm.
Throughout the year, Lola dedicates herself to intensive training in the pool. Thanks to her determination and commitment, she is able to obtain her national certificate of security and aquatic rescue (BNSSA). Each training session allows her to develop not only technical skills but also a self-confidence she never imagined she could possess.

A new chapter in life #
By engaging in this new universe, Lola discovers a real community. She meets dedicated volunteers within the SNSM, all united by the same passion for saving lives. Every event she participates in is an opportunity to grow and learn. For instance, she had the chance to meet iconic figures like Alain Bernard, the French swimmer, during one of her training sessions.
The fruits of effort #
Last summer, Lola puts her newly acquired skills into practice by working as a rescuer on Pullman beach in Mandelieu-la-Napoule. This new role seems to be the answer to her deep aspirations: she feels at home in this dynamic and rewarding environment. Her commitment, composure, and dedication earn her a letter of congratulations from the prefect, as well as a bronze medal for acts of courage and dedication.
A promising future #
As she forges her path, Lola remains open to the possibilities that life may offer. Although she has started studies in film school, she knows that her experience in the field of rescue will impact her future. She plans to continue her volunteering commitment while exploring her interest in cinema.
