IN BRIEF
|
In an eco-responsible approach, Reporterre embarks on a nine-day adventure, connecting Paris to Baku, Azerbaijan, to cover the COP29. Choosing to travel without flying, the environmental media will take trains and buses through eight countries, in a symbolic effort to reduce its carbon footprint while reporting on a major event regarding the climate issues of our time.

The challenge of environmental coverage #
The COP29, which will begin on November 11, has been designated to take place in Azerbaijan, a remote country with complex political implications. In light of this situation, the question of carbon footprint raises an intense debate. A round trip by plane from Paris would require more than one ton of CO2 for the journey, which contradicts the values upheld by Reporterre. Thus, the decision to travel by train has become obvious.
A responsible itinerary #
To avoid the inconveniences of a polluting flight, Reporterre opts for a journey by train, taking no less than nine trains during its trip. Each leg of the journey will offer a chance to discover varied landscapes while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The itinerary extends from Paris to Stuttgart, then continues to Vienna, Bucharest, Dimitrovgrad, then Istanbul and Ankara, before reaching Tbilisi in Georgia, and then Baku.
The constraints of the journey #
Each country presents its share of challenges, especially regarding ticket reservations and access to different modes of transport. Thus, in Bulgaria and Turkey, it is necessary to purchase tickets directly at the train station counters, making organization complex. Furthermore, the unstable socio-political situation in the region imposes certain precautions, particularly concerning entry into Armenia, which is currently not recommended by French authorities.
A human adventure #
This expedition is not just a simple trip; it promises to be a source of encounters and unexpected stories. Train journeys are often the stage for privileged moments, enriching exchanges between passengers. The vagaries of travel, such as delays or route changes, may offer opportunities for unexpected discoveries and sharing significant experiences. Reporterre will be attentive to capture these life moments throughout its journey.
A minimized carbon footprint #
Despite the inevitabilities of air travel to reach Baku, Reporterre believes that the choice of train travel combined with an air link for the final leg minimizes the environmental impact. Indeed, the cumulative carbon footprint of this journey remains lower than that of a direct flight, thereby highlighting the importance of sustainable solutions in environmental journalism.
A recognized commitment #
By sharing this experience, Reporterre demonstrates not only its commitment to ecological issues but also its willingness to rethink the working and travel methods of journalists. This approach is part of the continuity of collective efforts by various media outlets to adopt more environmentally friendly practices. Covering the COP29 through a low-carbon journey will be a true showcase of possible alternatives to the climate challenge.
