The tourism landscape in Algeria is undergoing significant changes, particularly regarding entry conditions for dual nationals. A clarification on the previously applied measure #

Since last May, a temporary measure had been implemented, facilitating the travel of dual nationals. Indeed, these nationals could enter the national territory armed only with their foreign passport without having to obtain a visa. This aimed to alleviate the administrative burden on consulates, particularly during the summer period when the demand for visas intensifies. This measure simplified the entry conditions and encouraged family ties.

However, this exception ended on October 31, 2024. Algerian dual nationals holding foreign passports must now provide a valid Algerian passport to enter Algeria, or, alternatively, obtain a visa. This change restores the traditional travel rules and signifies that the visa exemption is now over, bringing an end to a period of comfort for many travelers.

It should also be noted that during the duration of this measure, minors under 15 years accompanied by their parents were also exempted from the visa requirement, provided they could prove their familial relationship. Additionally, they could also travel based on documents such as a family booklet. This simplification facilitated family travel and was greatly appreciated by Algerians living abroad.

The new obligations for entering Algeria #

With the end of this measure, dual nationals must now necessarily present a valid Algerian passport. If they do not have this document, they are required to apply for a visa before their arrival. This implies prior organization that could weigh on individuals wishing to travel to Algeria, adding an additional layer of administrative formalities.

The general context of tourism in Algeria #

The Algerian government expresses high ambitions for the tourism sector and aims to welcome 12 million visitors by 2030. In this context, administrative measures have been simplified, but the elimination of this facility for dual nationals could be seen as a hindrance. Authorities must find a balance between adjusting regulations and encouraging tourism.
