The unexpected sophistication of Spokane, Washington

Spokane, nestled between the majestic Cascade Mountains and the Rocky Mountains, is often perceived as a simple city in the state of Washington. However, behind its rustic appearance lies a city rich in history, elegance, and culture. Far from the clichés of American cities, Spokane offers a refined experience for all those who take the time to explore it. Whether through its historic buildings, picturesque parks, or its thriving culinary scene, Spokane is a destination that deserves to be rediscovered.

A Historical Overview #

Founded in 1873, Spokane has managed to leverage its natural environment to assert itself as a regional hub. By 1886, it boasted electric public lighting, well before Portland, thanks to energy generated by the Spokane River falls. Initially, the city thrived on the lumber industry, with sawmills lining the riverbanks, allowing for the construction of sustainable and sometimes sumptuous infrastructures.

Despite a devastating fire in 1889 that nearly reduced its heart to ashes, Spokane rose from its ashes with a collection of historic brick buildings that testify to its determination and craftsmanship. Among them are the county courthouse, inspired by French castles, and the prestigious Davenport Hotel, which continues to attract visitors with its timeless charm.

The Vibrancy of Downtown #

Downtown Spokane is a delicate fusion of modernity and tradition. During my visits, the Davenport Hotel became my landmark. Reopened after extensive renovations, this architectural gem from 1914 offers a unique experience with spaces like the Emporium, where delicious candy canes are made daily, and the Lobby Bar, where one can enjoy a drink in an elegant setting.

Leisure options abound. In summer, rooftop yoga adds to the various activities offered, while afternoon tea in the Palm Court Grill immerses visitors in the extravagance of the past. Nearby, the Cork District, famous for its vineyards, allows visitors to explore the rich wine culture of the state, with numerous wineries within walking distance.

Exploring the City: Past and Present #

At the heart of Spokane lies Riverfront Park, the true lung of the city. Here, one can find the famous Spokane Falls, immaculately visible from the bridges crossing the river or even from a gondola on the Skyride. The park also features interpretive panels that tell the history of the region, highlighting the presence of Native Americans and the 1974 world’s fair, a landmark event that contributed to redefining the city.

A short walk away stands the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture, the largest cultural institution in the region within the Northwest. Visitors discover an impressive collection of Native artifacts, as well as local history through the Campbell House, a historic home that showcases regional architecture from the early 20th century.

The Botanical Charms of Manito Park #

Another treasure of Spokane is Manito Park, located on the south hill of the city. Well-known for its botanical gardens, this 90 acres park was designed with special attention, even though its original design included a zoo, an idea abandoned thanks to the advice of famous landscape architects. Today, the park is a true haven of peace, housing distinct garden areas that reflect its zoological past while celebrating the beauty of nature, including the Japanese Garden and the Duncan Garden, perfect for inspiring strolls.

A Culinary Scene to Discover #

Spokane also holds its own on the culinary front, with a food scene that rivals those of big cities. During my stay at the Davenport Hotel, I enjoyed dishes at the Palm Court Grill, under the direction of the talented chef Patrick Dahms, who takes pride in using local produce. A short walk away, the renowned Wild Sage Bistro offers dishes crafted from fresh fish and regional meats, while Inland Pacific Kitchen, with its less formal yet modern touch, provides a star-studded dining experience that highlights the region’s flavor blend.

Getting Around Spokane #

Getting around Spokane is a breeze. The city is easily navigable on foot and also offers many bike rental options. This is how I was able to discover picturesque spots without needing a car. The local tourism site offers an events calendar, whether for lilac blooms or art exhibitions, allowing visitors to plan their trip accordingly to seasonal events.

With a multitude of charming hotels, including various properties of the Davenport, every visitor can find refuge in places of undeniable elegance. As Spokane continues to evolve and establish itself, one discovers a city that blends history, culture, and sophistication, ready to entice even more travelers in search of off-the-beaten-path discoveries.
