An animated winter season #

As the navigation season comes to a close, the Port of Castelnaudary transforms into a cosmopolitan village. More than forty boats, inhabited by owners from various countries such as Ireland, Wales, Switzerland, and even the United States, enliven the docks during this period. Despite a temporary reduction in the number of boats, there is a noticeable effort to maintain local activity. The director of the tourist office, Thomas Badon, emphasizes the dynamism of the port by noting that, although some cancellations are to be regretted, a full wintering is expected.

Visitor numbers: a decrease to temper #

This season has nevertheless seen a <strong marked decrease in visitor numbers. Indeed, the port recorded 5,500 overnight stays, compared to 7,500 in previous years, representing a 30% decrease. This decline is particularly explained by the temporary closure of the Negra base, which has prompted some clients to redirect to facilities further from Castelnaudary. The consequences are noticeable, undermining the typically favorable dynamic of the port.

Revenue: a controlled drop #

Despite this drop in visitor numbers, the tourist office has been able to implement appropriate responses. By shifting to monthly rentals instead of traditional weekly rentals, a certain financial stability has been maintained. Even though revenue has decreased by 19%, this strategy has helped limit economic impacts and ensure an income for the port.

Initiatives for a sustainable port #

The Port of Castelnaudary also stands out for its sustainable approach, with the establishment of incentive rates to encourage more responsible water and electricity consumption. A 22% reduction in total energy consumption has been observed, resulting in a 19% decrease in energy costs. Furthermore, the port has turned towards initiatives such as slow tourism, thereby attracting a clientele of cycling tourists through tailored services such as luggage storage and secure bike parking.

Attracting a new clientele #

This year, the port has succeeded in diversifying its clientele by attracting visitors from Northern European countries, including Ukrainian, German, and Dutch tourists. Promotional efforts carried out at the regional level have also contributed to enhancing the tourism offering around the Canal du Midi. Thomas Badon highlights that development efforts in the Aude department have had a beneficial effect on the region’s attractiveness.

Upcoming events for winter residents #

The port has planned several festive events to energize local life during the winter. Winter residents will be able to follow the Vendée Globe race through the Virtual Regatta app. Competitions for lighting up houseboats and street performances are also on the agenda, creating a convivial and festive atmosphere within the port. However, the resumption of navigation, due to the low water level, is expected in early April, a necessary measure to protect local water resources.
