The city of Carmaux is undergoing a significant urban transformation with the demolition of the former tourist office. This initiative is part of the revitalization project for the city center named “Carmaux 2027”. The work, which began in November, aims to rehabilitate and modernize several main squares in the municipality, including Gambetta square, while paying particular attention to the environment and improving access for pedestrians.

The context of the demolition #
The former tourist office, strategically located between Pélisson and Gabarrou squares, had become an abandoned structure, threatening to collapse. This situation necessitated a rapid demolition to avoid any risk and free up space for future developments. The work began on November 18 with the partial demolition of this iconic building.
The stakes of rehabilitating public spaces #
As part of the “Carmaux 2027” plan, the rehabilitation of public space is crucial to meet the needs of residents and visitors. The project for Gambetta square, which will extend until September 2025, aims to provide a revitalized, modern, and accessible living environment. By integrating elements such as natural stone paving, ornamental trees, as well as a fountain and illuminated signage, the goal is to make it a pleasant meeting place for all.
A reimagined space for pedestrians #
The project is not limited to aesthetic improvements. With the introduction of a pedestrian walkway that will cross the square diagonally, the initiative seeks to promote pedestrian movement while limiting the space allocated to private cars. The aim is to create an environment where pedestrians and residents can reclaim urban space, ensuring smooth access to nearby shops and services.
The future of Gambetta square and beyond #
Gambetta square will not be the only one to benefit from a transformation. After the rehabilitation of this area, the city of Carmaux will turn its attention to Jean Jaurès square, where construction is planned for the end of 2025, with an estimated completion by the end of 2026. This project will include urban staging around the statue of Jean Jaurès, which will be enhanced by a water mirror and landscaped flowerbeds, thereby reinforcing the artistic and cultural dimension of public space.
A new future for tourist reception #
In parallel with the demolition of the former tourist office, the city of Carmaux plans to create a new welcome space for the Ségala Tarnais tourist office. This new location will allow for renewing the reception of visitors while making tourist information more accessible and highlighting the region’s assets.
