During this festive season, Dordogne lights up and visitors are invited to discover the nativity scenes installed in seven iconic sites of the Périgord noir. These installations not only symbolize the birth of Christ, but they also connect the traditional festive moments and the cultural heritage of the region. Each site offers a unique experience between history, nature, and activities, inviting everyone who wishes to rediscover the magic of Christmas from an original perspective.
The Châteaux des Milandes and Castelnaud
The Château des Milandes, in Castelnaud-la-Chapelle, houses a particularly touching nativity scene, located within the chapel grounds. This site, rich in history linked to Joséphine Baker, offers a festive atmosphere where the nativity scene evokes both tradition and art. The Château de Castelnaud, not far away, features an animated nativity scene with faithful Playmobil figurines, adding a playful and contemporary touch to this tradition.
The Roque Saint-Christophe and its panoramas
In Peyzac-le-Moustier, the Roque Saint-Christophe is an impressive troglodyte site, where a nativity scene is set in an exceptional natural setting. Visitors can stroll among the rock formations while admiring representative scenes of the Nativity. This historic site connects heritage and Christmas customs in a breathtaking landscape.
Maison forte de Reignac and roc de Cazelle
The Maison forte de Reignac in Tursac reveals a nativity scene in the honor room, a true reflection of medieval architecture. Visitors can admire not only the nativity scene but also the fascinating history of this site. Nearby, the roc de Cazelle, located in Les Eyzies, also presents a life-sized nativity scene, easily visible due to its imposing size that amazes both young and old.
The gardens of Marqueyssac
The gardens of Marqueyssac, in Vézac, add a romantic dimension to the visit with their nativity scene set in the gardens’ chapel, open exceptionally during this period. This enchanting place, with its trimmed boxwoods and breathtaking views of the Dordogne valley, provides an idyllic setting for Christmas traditions, inviting families to immerse themselves in the festive spirit.
The Proumeyssac chasm
Finally, the Proumeyssac chasm, in Audrix, offers an unprecedented immersive experience. Mapping projected onto the chasm walls creates a magical atmosphere where the nativity scene seems to float among the stalactites. This captivating visual spectacle combines nature, light, and tradition, captivating visitors of all ages.
A collective initiative for tourism
These nativity scene installations are the result of collaboration among several tourist sites of the Sites en Périgord association. The goal is to stimulate tourism during the typically quieter winter season. This initiative highlights the sense of community and the desire to share the magic of Christmas in a historic and cultural setting, thus creating a truly enchanting journey throughout the Dordogne valley.
