A Revealing Survey #

Five years after an initial study, the Hendaye Tourism organization once again surveyed residents about their perception of tourism. Despite some nuances, the responses lean towards an optimistic view. Nearly 16 % of participants believe the impact is negative, but these figures also show an underlying complexity of opinions on the subject. According to Jean-Sébastien Halty, the director of Hendaye Tourism, there is a shift in these perceptions, depending on the length of residence of the inhabitants, an element to consider in the analysis of the results.

A Privileged Living Environment #

Far from the image of a dissatisfied Hendaye resident, the study instead highlights a strong sense of belonging to a living environment that attracts many tourists. The city’s assets, such as its beach and natural heritage, are elements that participants regularly highlight, appreciating the proximity to Spain and the activities offered year-round.

The Tourism Flow: A Positive Economic Assessment #

According to the collected data, Hendaye attracts approximately three million visitors each year, including 600,000 vacationers spending at least one night in the city. This influx contributes to stimulating the local economy. Indeed, nearly 90 % of respondents believe that tourism development is a genuine leverage for growth for the municipality. Cultural activities, varied events, and local engagement are all facets that enhance the city’s appeal for both residents and visitors.

The Nuisances of Tourism #

Although tourism brings numerous benefits, it is not without undesirable effects. 74 % of Hendaye residents report nuisances associated with the influx of people, including issues with traffic and parking, as well as rising real estate prices. These nuisances are particularly felt during the peak summer season, underscoring the need for a balance between tourism development and quality of life.

An Inclusion Policy #

In an effort to mitigate these inconveniences, the Hendaye Tourism organization has implemented initiatives targeting both tourists and residents. For instance, during the Children’s Weeks, a balanced participation between locals and visitors has been observed. This demonstrates that the city’s policy strives to create an environment where everyone can benefit from the dynamism brought by tourism.
