From April 2, 2025, essential formalities will be implemented for anyone wishing to travel to the United Kingdom. This will impact millions of European citizens, especially the French, who will need to adapt to these new travel rules. In this article, we will explore the main changes to expect, including the requirement for a valid passport, the introduction of the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA), and other important points related to entering British territory.
The date: April 2, 2025 #
It is on April 2, 2025 that the new measures will come into effect. All European citizens wishing to travel to the United Kingdom, whether to London, Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland, will have to comply with the new rules. However, the Channel Islands will benefit from slightly different provisions, offering more flexibility.
Passport required #
The passport becomes an essential document for entering the United Kingdom. Since 2021, it has already been required for French citizens, thus ending the use of a simple identity card. Young travelers on school trips do, however, retain some exceptions, as do those holding the status of “European resident in the UK.” This will mark a significant change for many travelers used to less stringent formalities.
Electronic Travel Authorization #
The biggest novelty will be the introduction of an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). From April 2, 2025, all French and European citizens of all ages will need to apply for it to enter British territory. This provision will already be in place for certain nationalities and will be valid for several stays of up to 6 months per trip, over a period of two years or until the passport expires.

The cost of the application will initially be £10, but could rise to £16. Applications will open from March 5, 2025, and can be made online through the UK government website. Authorities estimate that most applications will be processed within three days.
Nevertheless, it is essential to keep in mind that the final decision on entry into the territory will be left to customs authorities upon arrival, regardless of compliance with the required formalities.
No more than 6 months on-site #
British visitors allow a maximum stay of 6 months without needing a visa. For French nationals and EU citizens, this new rule means that any intention to work, study, or settle in the country will require the appropriate visa. This marks a new era in exchanges and the management of administrative formalities during stays in the United Kingdom.
Some special cases #
Transit passengers in a UK airport
Transit passengers, those who do not need to pass through customs, will be exempt from the ETA. This is a recent decision, which could, however, remain temporary. This is something to keep a close watch on!

Group travel
For those traveling in groups, each participant will be required to make their own ETA application. Great news for travel organizers!
School trips
It has been decided that students under the age of 18 participating in school trips will be exempt from the ETA, which eases some of the procedures for school groups. However, teachers and students over 18 will have to comply with this requirement. In addition, students whose nationality requires a visa will benefit from a temporary exemption. However, these rules may be revised in the future, so vigilance is advised!
