IN BRIEF
|
Starting April 2, 2025, French citizens will be required to hold an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) to enter the United Kingdom, including England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. This new requirement applies to both tourist and business stays. The ETA, which is a paid document, will require an online application process and is essential for all travelers who do not need a visa.
Requirements for Obtaining the ETA
To obtain the ETA, French travelers must meet certain conditions. In the absence of a visa or a resident status, it will be imperative to apply for an ETA. This applies to everyone, whether for vacations or business trips. Exceptions to this obligation include those who already hold a visa, permanent residents, as well as travelers transiting through a UK airport without passing through border control.
Exceptions to the Rule
There are several categories of people who are not required to apply for an ETA. For example, students aged 18 and under participating in school trips to the UK will be exempt. However, they must have a travel authorization, a copy of their parents’ identity documents, and a valid passport or identity card.
Cost and Application Procedure
The ETA will be charged at prices that will vary over time. Initially, the cost is set at £10, approximately €12; this rate will increase to £16 starting April 9, 2025. Once the application is submitted, no refunds will be granted, even in case of refusal.
ETA applicants must prepare certain documents for their application. This includes a valid biometric passport, a recent high-quality photo, a functional email address, and a form of electronic payment such as Visa or Mastercard.
Processing Time and Validity of the ETA
The processing of online ETA applications is expected to take about three working days, according to information provided by the UK government. The ETA, once obtained, allows for a maximum stay of six months in the UK, with the possibility of multiple trips over a period of two years. Note that this authorization must be renewed if a passport change occurs.
What the ETA Allows and Prohibits
With an ETA, travelers can enter the UK for stays of less than six months, whether for tourism, family visits, business, or short-term studies. However, it is important to note that this document does not permit:
- To work, whether paid or unpaid, except under a Creative Worker visa.
- To reside in the UK on a regular basis or to marry without obtaining a specific visitor visa.
- Requests for social benefits or public funds.
It is therefore crucial for travelers to check their visa or ETA requirements with their transport company before planning their trip.
For more details on the ETA application process, you can consult dedicated online resources. For example, a practical guide is available on this site, offering useful information to navigate through this new regulation.
Another guide specifically addresses workers, clarifying aspects of the ETA based on the nature of their stay. It is advisable to stay informed to anticipate these changes and avoid any setbacks during your trip.
