Prepare to live a unique adventure, from canvas to canvas, to discover unsuspected cultural treasures.
The unique charm of the Bohuslän archipelago
The archipelago of Bohuslän, located along the west coast of Sweden, is a treasure trove of more than 8,000 islands and islets. Of Gothenburg on the Norwegian border, this region offers an enchanting blend of serene nature, picturesque villages and a rich cultural heritage. Imagine smooth granite rocks, crystal clear waters and clear blue summer skies contrasting with the lush greenery of the forests.
Start your trip to Gothenburg
I begin my adventure at Gothenburg, the gateway to the archipelago. Gothenburg is Sweden’s second largest city, with an attractive combination of parks, canals, and cobbled streets. The city’s port, the largest in the Nordic countries, is also crossed by numerous canals, making it an ideal starting point for exploring the islands. The views from the Skansen Kronan fortress in the district of Haga are unforgettable, especially on a sunny day.
Marstrand Island
About an hour’s bus ride northwest of Gothenburg is Marstrand. This island, famous for its fortress Carlsten from the 17th century, offers a magnificent walk around its 5 km of coastline, where you can admire colorful wooden houses on the seafront.
- Enjoy a tour of Carlsten Fortress.
- Swim in the many tranquil bays.
- Explore the marked trails on the nearby island of Koön.
Dyrön and its coastal path
Then I head towards Dyron, known for being a car-free natural paradise. The trail Dyröleden which circles the island is perfect for a peaceful hike. Local wildlife is abundant, and lunch at Trålverket restaurant, with sea views, is a treat. Don’t hesitate to swim in the clear waters before leaving.
Ramsvikslandet: The Kingdom of Rocks
Ramsvikslandet, once a peninsula and now an island, is famous for its unique rock formations. The Ramsvikslandet nature reserve offers breathtaking landscapes of wave-worn rocks, interspersed with forests and marshes. Haby Bay is a great place to swim, although I’m pressed for time on this one.
Smögen: The tourist jewel
The lively beach of Smögen, with its colorful wooden houses and seafood restaurants, is a must. Strolling along the port, you can observe fishermen unloading their catch. For hiking enthusiasts, the trail Kuststigen offers a varied route through forests and marshes, with breathtaking views of the other islands of the archipelago.
A list not to be missed in Smögen:
- The colorful wooden houses of the port.
- The morning fish market.
- The Kuststigen hiking trail.
