Fire at Tours train station: impact for travelers ahead of its expected reopening at the end of April

The railway world of Tours is experiencing somewhat chaotic days due to a fire that occurred at the end of March near the train station. This incident has disrupted traffic regulation, causing delays for travelers hoping to take a train to or from this beautiful city in Indre-et-Loire. The reopening of the station is scheduled for April 29, but until then, the flow of trains has shifted to the neighboring station of Saint-Pierre-des-Corps, complicating the daily life of commuters.

A fire that occurred near the Tours station at the end of March led to a temporary closure of this iconic station. Travelers are facing significant disruptions in their journeys, especially during this school holiday period. A return to normal is expected by April 29, but in the meantime, it is crucial to understand the impact of this situation on rail users.

The consequences of the fire

The incident took place during the night of March 28 to 29, affecting a crucial signaling post for the proper functioning of rail traffic. This intervention forced SNCF to close the Tours station for several weeks to carry out necessary repairs. Departures and arrivals of trains are therefore redirected to the Saint-Pierre-des-Corps station, located just 4 km away.

A postponement of departures and arrivals

Travelers are compelled to face changes to their usual schedules. According to information provided by Rémi, the intercity mobility network of the Centre-Val de Loire region, this station cannot accommodate all the rail traffic initially planned at the Tours station. As a result, users can expect a reduced number of trains and several cancellations of journeys, particularly during the Easter school holidays.

The trains that are still operating

Out of the 170 daily TER services, only two out of three are maintained on weekdays, and four out of five during the weekend. Furthermore, the seven TGV trains from Paris to Tours continue to operate, but with a departure and arrival at the Saint-Pierre-des-Corps station. These disruptions are inconvenient for regular users, but the company is doing everything possible to minimize the impact on travelers.

Alternative transport solutions

To assist travelers getting to the Saint-Pierre-des-Corps station, a free shuttle service has been established. It operates between the two stations, with departures every 30 minutes, from 5:30 AM to 7 PM, for a journey of about 10 to 15 minutes. Additionally, users can utilize urban bus lines 5 and 11, with the purchase of a Fil Bleu transport ticket, costing €1.60 per ride.

What compensations for users?

This challenging context for commuters could, however, be alleviated. SNCF Réseau is planning compensations for nearly all TER subscribers traveling through Tours, who should receive about 30 euros to offset the inconveniences caused by the station’s closure. Particular attention is being paid to user satisfaction even during times of crisis.

Expected return to normal

The ongoing works should allow the Tours station to reopen on the morning of Monday, April 29. This much-anticipated date will mark a return to normality for many users who have had to endure this period of disruptions. SNCF is doing everything possible to ensure that the recovery is as swift as possible, allowing both tourists and regulars to resume their travels with peace of mind.
