A night train startup in Europe promises an eco-friendly and luxurious journey at affordable prices

A revolutionary initiative emerges: a Berlin-based startup is redefining the night train travel between European metropolises. Crossing borders, without sacrificing luxurious comfort or affordable pricing, is now deemed possible. Against the backdrop of outdated trains, cramped compartments, and prohibitive fares of traditional night trains, this project offers an exclusive and eco-friendly journey at competitive prices. The private cabins, featuring a refined aesthetic, stand in stark contrast to the anonymity of classic carriages, providing a radical alternative to short, polluting flights. Reinventing nighttime mobility also means confronting the burden of European railway regulations to elevate the traveler experience to new heights.

A new era of European night trains

The Berlin company Nox Mobility injects a fresh breath into the night train sector, proposing to interconnect over a dozen European metropolises through an ambitious network of modern trains. The stated ambitions challenge the obsolescence of older models, betting on private cabins with refined design, at the price of a short-distance flight ticket.

Currently, most night trains on the continent are characterized by cramped compartments, rarely private, with often outdated amenities, as evidenced by the experience aboard the European Sleeper from Brussels to Prague. The contrast with innovative offers has never been more striking.

Reinventing the nighttime railway experience

Janek Smalla, co-founder of Nox, identifies the night train as the most poorly utilized mode of transport in Europe. He points to a lack of reliability, comfort, and absence of choice for travelers seeking serenity and intimacy. The cramped quarters and high cost of private cabins often deter potential travelers. Additionally, in many cases, the fare exceeds that of flying.

However, Smalla aims to make the night train both affordable, comfortable, and efficient. In the face of the constraints of short flights – long queues, narrow seats, lack of privacy – the night train promises a peaceful and restful journey. *Sleeping onboard to wake up in a new city is positioned as a gentler, and decidedly more eco-friendly, alternative to air travel.*

Cabins designed for every traveler

Nox will offer three categories of private cabins: “Single” and “Double Loft,” featuring mezzanine bunk beds accessible by ladder, accompanied by a lounge area and a table. A window allows passengers to admire the scenery while lying perpendicular to the direction of travel.

The “Double Vista” version elevates the level of refinement with beds at chest height, convertible into daybeds, and a panoramic window inviting contemplation. *These modular cabins offer two-meter mattresses and the option to add acoustic doors to connect rooms, a significant advantage for families or groups of friends.*

The starting price, from €79 for a single room and €149 for a double, adjusts its curve based on demand, simplifying reservation by room, not by passenger.

Onboard services designed for everyone

The onboard experience will be enriched with catering services, bike-friendly spaces, and cars accessible for wheelchair users. This attention to a variety of needs reveals a desire to democratize a previously elitist railway experience.

Nox’s announcement comes at a time when the railway sector is experiencing a renaissance, despite temporary suspensions observed on the night lines Paris-Berlin and Paris-Vienna for renovations (more information). The adaptability of offers to each traveler profile – solo women (dedicated night experiences) or families – could permanently transform rail usage (example of current alternatives).

A long-term vision for reinvented rail

Nox’s goal: to serve a hundred major European routes by 2036, connecting Amsterdam, Paris, Barcelona, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Berlin, Warsaw, Frankfurt, Munich, Vienna, Zurich, Milan, and Rome. This ambition takes on particular significance in light of the complex European rail regulations, with its fragmented infrastructure, interminable decision cycles, and technical challenges. The experiences of startups like Midnight Train remind us of the volatility of this sector.

Nox is focusing on the construction of new, standardized, and modular trains, collaborating with major railway operators to limit costs and enhance efficiency. Total control of the reservation platform and schedules, managed internally, is expected to transform the customer experience, compared to the models adopted by other competing initiatives (analysis of other models across the Channel).

Ecology, modernity, and price attractiveness

The ecological challenge weighs heavily on travelers’ choices in Europe. Nox’s promise: to offer an environmentally friendly alternative, contrary to the carbon impact of airplanes, without compromising on refinement or comfort. *Traveling by train has perhaps never made as much sense: combining efficiency, serenity, and environmental awareness, at an accessible price.*

The company continues its work towards approval for cabin designs and is preparing for a major fundraising effort to kick-start the launch of its first lines in 2027. This “accessible luxury” positioning is part of a drive towards innovative European mobility, where every segment of clientele – from novices to seasoned globetrotters – will find its place (other perspectives on the evolution of rail).
