Public parks and gardens dedicated to clean air
Forget the traditional cigarette break on the benches in the sun! Since this July, every public park and urban garden has joined the list of smoke-free zones. The new regulation aims to offer families, walkers, and sports enthusiasts a breath of fresh air, free from secondhand smoke ruining the fun. Protected perimeters around schools, libraries, and sports facilities
The vicinity of establishments frequented by children and adolescents is now under scrutiny. From now on, smoking is completely prohibited within 10 meters of schools, public libraries, swimming pools, and other sports facilities. No more lighting up a cigarette at the pool exit or while waiting for the little ones’ soccer match to end! These environments are becoming true bubbles of clean air, where health and safety are prioritized.
Bus shelters: no tobacco while waiting for the bus
Even the waiting time at bus shelters is now smoke-free – or rather, in no tobacco mode! No one can smoke a cigarette under the shelter, nor in the immediate vicinity, within a radius of about ten meters. Parisian public transport is now proudly displaying its commitment to clean air! Some exceptions… and a few ongoing debates
Beware, not all outdoor spaces are treated the same. Café and restaurant terraces remain, for the moment, strongholds of cigarettes. As for the famous e-cigarette, it still continues to be an exception, much to the dismay of some defenders of clean air! This artistic vagueness sparks some debates, but the trend is clear: France is moving forward to breathe better, place by place.
The educational period and the threat of fines
Because habits cannot be changed with a magic wand, France is taking a pedagogical approach: in the first weeks, there will be awareness, explanations, and reminders of the law. But beware, once the information phase is over… Watch out for fines! For those who resist, the penalty is €135 fine – enough to motivate many smokers to revise their nicotine breaks.
