Cycling Routes on the Millevaches Plateau
The south of the Creuse reveals an exceptional playground for cycling enthusiasts in search of varied landscapes and pure air. The Millevaches plateau stands out as a mosaic of meadows, forests, and magnificent viewpoints, dedicated to the practice of the “little queen”.
Departure from Felletin: Between Heritage and Wild Nature
The adventure begins in Felletin, a peaceful village, where the charming Roby bridge spans the Creuse. By bicycle, the route follows the marked tour of the Creuse by bike, running from Crozant to Aubusson over 327 kilometers, in a succession of changing landscapes. Towards Saint-Quentin-la-Chabanne, the four-bay bell tower imposes a contemplative stop, while the road slopes down towards the Gallo-Roman villa of Maissionnières, covered with oaks, where the ruins sleep in lazy shade.
Ascents and Grandiose Panoramas
The Puy d’Hyverneresse, rising to 852 meters, offers a panorama of rare amplitude: *the Sancy and the Puy de Dôme can be discerned on the horizon, framed by Felletin and the chameleon plateau of Millevaches*. Overlooking the Gioune valley, classified among the first “wild rivers” in France, the walk sometimes encounters the rarity of otters. The very typical “plank bridges,” granite slabs set on two stone piles, dot the rolling countryside, alternating beech forests, bright meadows, and granite at Féniers. Only seven cars crossed since dawn!
Pond of Féniers and the Source of the Creuse: Refreshing Stops
After a snack break by the pond of Féniers, whose black water reflects the heather and pines, the path slopes towards the source of the Creuse. A crescent of pure water, covered with floating grasses and watercress, invites leisurely wandering. The D19 provides a thrilling descent, offering a liberating view over the valley of Croze. Felletin reappears, guarded by its bell tower and the steadfast Roby bridge. A loop of 45 kilometers, 700 meters of elevation gain, and unparalleled visual bursts.
Tour of Lake Vassivière: Forest Symphony and Contemporary Art
First Spins and Enchanting Shores
On the paths of Lake Vassivière, the bike adapts and takes on an all-terrain accent. The shores of the vast artificial body of water, formed in 1950, roll out a marked cycling loop in blue, punctuated by forest incursions and escapes onto the lake’s mirror. The Chassagras peninsula, kingdom of oaks and beeches, rises slowly before offering, from its tumulus summit, a majestic view of the lake’s aquatic lace.
Vauveix Island and Puy de la Croix: A Plant Symphony
Along a graceful footbridge, the lakeside island of Vauveix invites an initiatory walk among birches and Scots pines. Further on, the Puy de la Croix captivates the curious with a path lined with carved stones, before opening up to one of the most stunning viewpoints in the region. The Douglas fir forests and wild islets evoke true Canadian visions; heather and gorse, once omnipresent, have been welcomed by the deep forestry.
Unusual Experiences and Artistic Escapes
Alluring beaches, guaranteed swimming at Nergout — but the surprise occurs at Pierrefitte: a hydrofoiler, a foil bicycle, dares to defy gravity on water. The initiation sometimes leads to… great bursts of laughter! The temperate lake knows how to be welcoming to cyclists and other candidates for breaststroke.
Emerging from the past, Vassivière Island emerged in 1952 and is now dedicated to contemporary creation. The International Center for Art and Landscape (CIAPV) combines galleries, sculptures in nature, and an old neo-Gothic castle. An artist-baker delights palates with the flavor of wood-fired bread. Guided bike or canoe tours punctuate the discovery of this place where art touches heritage.
The unique architecture of CIAPV, designed by Aldo Rossi and Xavier Fabre (1991), blends into the landscape. Further on, the storytelling festival animates Auphelle each year, while the forest’s murmurs accompany visitors throughout the journey.
Vassivière Dam and Final Loop
After a “modest bridge,” the dam imposes its granite wall: 33 meters high, 233 meters crest, holding back 106 million cubic meters of water. The loop concludes on 41 kilometers, 600 meters of steep elevation, leaving an indelible memory of a vibrant and colorful tour of the lake.
The Creuse by Bike: A Mosaic of Adventures
The diversity of circuits, the singular calm of forest roads, the boldness of slopes, the artistry of panoramas: each day offers its reward. The few villages nestled in clearings, the pauses by the water, the scent of ferns, mark a timeless interlude, conducive to cycling escapes.
Cycling enthusiasts will also appreciate other European journeys, be it in Sweden on the cycle route, in Scotland by electric bike, or during more distant odysseys, such as the tourist railway project in Guatemala (more information here), or even Norway by bicycle (journey of Guenaël Josseaume). Not to mention the French micro-adventures: explore differently in Loire-Atlantique! The Creuse, with its secret paths, has nothing to envy from these distant horizons.
