IN BRIEF
|
Villeneuve has recently been the stage for an unprecedented adventure for its seniors, who set off to discover Albania alongside members of neighboring clubs. During a week, the small group explored the hidden treasures of this Balkan country, oscillating between sea, mountain, history, and hospitality. This stay allowed participants to enrich themselves humanly and culturally, while experiencing strong moments of conviviality and sharing. A detailed recap of this beautiful getaway and the active life of the Friendship Club.
An enriching journey in the heart of the Balkans
Accompanied by about thirty members from neighboring clubs, the seniors from Villeneuve set off for Albania, sometimes nicknamed the pearl of the Balkans. Despite its modest size – barely the equivalent of three French departments – this country reveals a surprising diversity. Bordered by the Adriatic Sea and located at the crossroads of civilizations, Albania enchants with its contrasting landscapes and very Mediterranean climate. This week-long trip, organized from June 15 to 22, offered participants an immersion in a territory long kept away from mass tourism.
Heritage and historical discoveries
Throughout the days, travelers were able to admire Tirana, the dynamic capital, and then discover Vlorë, a renowned seaside resort. The visit continued with Berat, “the city of a thousand windows,” famous for its castle dating back to 500 BC, and the remarkable site of Appolonia, where excavations reveal new remains each year over its one hundred hectares. These stops allowed for a better understanding of Albania’s rich history, marked successively by the Roman period, Ottoman occupation, and the Soviet era.
Immersion in Albanian culture
The stay offered authentic experiences, such as the visit to the Ardenica Orthodox Monastery, the last one still in operation in the country. Set off for a boat excursion, the seniors approached the island of Sazan and then followed the Karabrun peninsula, enjoying preserved nature. In Gjirokaster, a UNESCO World Heritage city, discovering the largest citadel in the country provided a deep dive into medieval history, just a few kilometers from the Greek border.
Meetings and hospitality throughout the stay
In Durres, an emblematic port, the visit of the newly updated amphitheater left a lasting impression, notably with the surprising presence of buildings constructed on the site. Participants appreciated the warmth of the Albanian welcome and the remarkable preservation of a territory kept away from excessive tourism. Everyone returned with precious memories to share, from travel anecdotes to gastronomic discoveries and moments of exchange during the visits.
