In France, the prestigious label of the Most Beautiful Villages of France remains a true honor for many small communes, synonymous with authenticity, heritage, and breathtaking landscapes. Recently, two villages have achieved this coveted title and enrich the list of these magical places where charm rhymes with history. Let’s discover together the secrets and beauty of Chambon-sur-Voueize, in Creuse, and Mont-Dauphin, in Hautes-Alpes, two newly labeled communes, not forgetting to delve into the behind-the-scenes of this highly sought-after distinction.
On June 28, the large family of Most Beautiful Villages of France welcomed two new members: Chambon-sur-Voueize and Mont-Dauphin. These villages, carefully chosen for their exceptional character, are now part of the 182 communes spread throughout French territory, embodying the spirit of regional heritage and charming tourism.
Chambon-sur-Voueize, first in Creuse
Imagine a small town nestled in the heart of Creuse, surrounded by the authentic landscapes of Berry, Limousin, and Auvergne. Chambon-sur-Voueize shines not only as the first Creuse commune to obtain the label but also as a heritage gem. Its impressive abbey church started in the 11th century, its elegant Romanesque bridge spanning the Voueize, and its old village with typical architecture will transport you through time. The peaceful atmosphere and local charm entice lovers of authentic getaways in search of discreet beauty.
By the way, if picturesque villages call to you, also let yourself be tempted by the splendor of Salins-les-Bains or the charm of Peyre, other pearls of rural heritage to explore.
Mont-Dauphin, the perched fortress of Hautes-Alpes
In a completely different setting, head to the Hautes-Alpes to discover Mont-Dauphin, a fortress perched on its rocky spur at over 1,000 meters above sea level. This unique village owes its creation to Louis XIV and its fame to Vauban, the famous military engineer. Today, stroll through its colorful streets lined with artisan workshops, admire the incredible military architecture, and let yourself be captivated by the breathtaking Alpine panorama. The rich history of this village, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, offers an unmissable stop for history buffs and fans of spectacular views.
To continue this mountainous journey, be sure to visit La Grave, a true balcony over the Meije, another impressive facet of the Hautes-Alpes.
The Label of the Most Beautiful Villages: a very exclusive club
The award of the title Most Beautiful Village of France is far from a formality, quite the opposite! Created in 1982 by a passionate elected official from Collonges-la-Rouge, the association aims to highlight villages with fewer than 2,000 inhabitants that present a preserved heritage and a certain charm. Quality, renown, and development are the guiding principles of the selection committee. Each application undergoes a meticulous inspection by a jury, ready to track down the slightest false note.
Only 20% of candidate communes ultimately get the coveted label. To maintain excellence, an awarded village is reevaluated every six to nine years, risking a loss of this prestigious status in case of shortcomings. A requirement that ensures that every selected village truly deserves its place on this unique list.
A tourist and economic asset
Behind this recognition lies a dual strategic challenge: preserving authenticity while boosting the economic attractiveness of small localities. Joining the “Most Beautiful Villages of France” often ensures a significant tourist boom, with an influx of visitors seeking getaways off the beaten path. Merchants, hoteliers, artisans, and restaurateurs directly benefit from this influx, contributing to the vitality of rural areas while enhancing local heritage.
If you have a taste for charming villages, do not miss the discovery of the new honored communes or set out to conquer the most beautiful coastal villages in Europe.
