IN BRIEF
|
This summer, the city of Châteauroux set a new participation record with 424 children registered for the “learning holidays,” an educational program launched in 2020. These holidays, which combine school reviews and fun activities, are accessible to a broad audience, allowing families from all backgrounds to benefit from this educational initiative.
An inclusive and diverse program
The “learning holidays” are aimed at students from first grade to ninth grade and are organized over a duration of six weeks. Children are welcomed in two establishments in Châteauroux: Victor Hugo school located in the Beaulieu neighborhood and Louis de Frontenac school in Saint-Jean. Each child can register for a maximum duration of 15 days, allowing them to balance learning and relaxation.
The principle is simple: students spend the morning reviewing school material in a less formal setting than that of the school year. Then, the afternoon is reserved for sports, cultural, or recreational activities. Additionally, one day per week is entirely dedicated to an outing, which also promotes socialization among the young participants.
Accessibility and inclusion at the heart of the program
According to Sébastien Rety, director of the DRE (Educational Success Program) in Châteauroux, the success of this initiative largely relies on its commitment to inclusion. The ability to register directly in schools and accessible prices, which range from five to 30 euros per week, have made it possible to reach a wide audience. Indeed, this year, 73% of the registered children come from priority neighborhoods of urban policy.
The City has also implemented shuttles to ensure the transportation of children, a valuable asset for low-income families who wish to take advantage of this educational program during the summer holidays.
Professional and committed supervision
To ensure quality supervision, the “learning holidays” rely on the presence of 34 teachers and 19 facilitators. This professional team is dedicated to ensuring the smooth running of activities while guaranteeing the safety and well-being of the children. With a total budget of 240,000 euros, this educational program reflects a strong commitment from the municipality to education and the development of youth.
Some related initiatives, such as “educational camps” by the sea, complement this program, offering children a diverse and formative experience beyond the city.
A positive impact on the community
With an unprecedented mobilization, these “learning holidays” not only enhance the education level of young people but also contribute to the social cohesion of the city. The success of this program could make Châteauroux a benchmark in terms of accessible educational initiatives. Indeed, other cities might draw inspiration from this model concerning inclusion and equity within education programs.
It is likely that next year, Châteauroux will continue on this path, attracting even more children and thereby strengthening its role in promoting quality education for all.
