Taking the sea in a motorhome or arriving with a backpack in Paris, it’s an adventure… But do you know the Touriscore? This new evaluation tool, inspired by the famous Nutri-Score, revolutionizes the way you choose your urban destinations by measuring their level of tourist attendance. Follow the guide and discover everything you need to know to prepare your next getaways in France, without any unpleasant surprises related to over-tourism!

From the crowded beaches of the French Riviera to the peaceful alleys of small provincial towns, traveling in France often means juggling the joy of discovery… and the crowd of tourists. To help travelers and protect the quality of life for residents, the Touriscore joins the ranks of intelligent indicators. Its goal: to rank French cities according to their level of tourist attendance and allow everyone to better choose where to drop their bags.

Where does the Touriscore come from?

The concept is enticing: like the Nutri-Score that guides our purchases in the supermarket, the Touriscore assigns a score, from A to E, to French cities with more than 10,000 inhabitants. The idea? To provide simple and visual information about the degree of over-tourism of each destination. Behind this initiative, a team from “Dream City” has examined the issue by cross-referencing various complex factors to create this unique barometer.

The four main criteria analyzed

The Touriscore does not just measure the flow of tourists in flip-flops and with cameras. It examines four key elements: first, the proportion of tourist rentals in the city center. Next, the percentage of properties rented out as tourist accommodations in the local market. Additionally, the number of professional renters (the famous Airbnb pros who keep the nights rolling), as well as the density of bars and restaurants per square kilometer, along with all the small joys – but also the nuisances – that this can bring, particularly in terms of traffic, noise, or waste management.

Results that pique curiosity

Out of a total of 331 municipalities examined, four out of ten earn a Touriscore A or B, synonymous with tourist tranquility. Conversely, three out of ten show a score in D or E, alerting about high attendance and its consequences for locals. Regarding distribution: unsurprisingly, the less visited suburbs lead with the best scores, while sought-after seaside gems and star tourist cities often see their scores drop.

Traveling differently with the Touriscore

Your heart wavers between the allure of a weekend on the coast and the desire for peaceful walks away from the toothless crowds? The Touriscore offers an unprecedented compass to reconcile the desire to explore with respect for local rhythms. By consulting this tool before booking, it becomes simple to choose a city to stroll in without fearing long waits at every café terrace or tripping over every alley.

This barometer is not just for visitors. Residents, often the first affected by the tourist wave, also benefit from it by seeing the balance – or the slip-ups – between conviviality and over-attendance illuminated.

What if the Touriscore became your new ally?

Imagine your next travels: a lively but accessible big city, a seaside resort that combines excitement and calm, a cultural getaway where you encounter more locals than tourists. Thanks to the Touriscore, these scenarios become accessible at a glance, allowing you to spot the still-preserved gems… or adapt your stay with full awareness in the most popular areas.

In practice: using the Touriscore to plan your stay

To travel lighthearted, just one reflex: check the Touriscore of your next urban or seaside destination. Are you hesitating between several cities or neighborhoods? Compare their scores as you would when choosing a bottle of olive oil or a box of cereal! This clever reflex will help you avoid unpleasant surprises: overcrowded accommodations, long wait times, and sometimes frenzied atmospheres.

So, the next time you plan your vacation, consider consulting this new travel companion. Better informed, you will travel more pleasantly… and contribute, in your own way, to preserving the magic of French destinations!
