IN BRIEF
|
Summer travels are often an opportunity to discover new horizons, but they can also turn into a real obstacle course when it comes to taking a break at rest areas. Among the main concerns of travelers are the public toilets, which, in some cases, can be particularly deplorable. Indeed, it is not uncommon to encounter visible feces, a reality that leaves many users uncomfortable and searching for alternatives.
Feared toilets at certain areas
Rest areas are supposed to provide a moment of respite for motorists, but some of them have become famous for the wrong reasons. This is the case of the Entrange area, on the A31, heading towards Luxembourg, often nicknamed “the toilets from hell“. Testimonials are plentiful, like that of Maria who hurried out after facing a disturbing sight: feces littering the ground and walls, as well as completely blocked urinals.
Disillusioned users
The reactions of travelers upon seeing such facilities are often similar. Many motorists have shared their distress after leaving these toilets after just a few moments. An experience which, according to several, is anything but reassuring. “It makes you want to vomit,” expressed a group of travelers, testifying to a despair in the face of this situation.
Improvised solutions in the face of horror
Unable to find acceptable toilets, some users do not hesitate to resort to alternative solutions. One father notably took the initiative to take his daughters behind a bush, indicating that the influx of people made access to the restrooms impossible. These scenarios illustrate the distress that inadequate and degraded sanitary facilities can cause.
Insufficient maintenance despite high costs
Surprisingly, this area, although subjected to maintenance, experiences an alarming cycle of degradation. An employee responsible for maintenance mentioned the difficult situation to manage, stating that he finds himself each morning facing toilets in a state of disrepair, despite having completed a cleaning round just twenty minutes earlier. The annual maintenance cost of such facilities can reach several tens of thousands of euros, an amount that regularly sparks debate about its optimal use.
A matter of image for the country
The cleanliness of public toilets is not just a matter of hygiene; it is also a fundamental issue for the image of France. The Interdepartmental Roads Directorate acknowledges the challenges it faces in maintaining an acceptable level of hygiene against a usage deemed “not at all normal.” The efforts made by the services to ensure cleanliness are often undermined by user behavior.
Absence of short-term solutions
Despite promises of improvement, no concrete measures are currently planned to remedy this dismal situation, especially during holiday periods. The Entrange area has already been closed for renovations for a while at the end of 2023, but future updates seem uncertain and inadequate to meet the immediate needs of users.
As summer travels approach, motorists will once again find themselves confronted with this unpleasant reality, making the experience of taking a break on the highway more stressful than it should be.
