At nightfall, our igloo room in the Land of Cold lights up like a polar beacon. Behind the half-submerged glass bay window, two walruses glide underwater, curious neighbors turning silence into an aquatic ballet. In this lodge resembling an aquarium, the immersion is total: we live to the rhythm of the ice giants, between breath and surge. Welcome to Pairi Daiza, in Belgium, the largest zoo in Europe, where a simple night is enough to propel you far beyond the polar circle.
Ready for a night facing 800-kilo mustaches and a gaze as soft as a snowflake? Here is our thrilled feedback on a unique experience at Pairi Daiza, the largest wildlife park in Europe in size. One hour from Lille, we slept in a semi-submerged lodge in the Land of Cold, observed two curious walruses from a huge aquarium-style bay window, explored the nine worlds of the park during a private morning, tasted the half-board between Izba and Le Mökki, tried an Animal Adventures activity, and enjoyed upscale hotel comfort. Here’s how to make the most of these 75 hectares populated by 7500 animals representing 800 species.
Night Diving Among the Walruses
When night falls over Pairi Daiza, the large bay window of our Walrus House turns into a living screen: massive silhouettes, air bubbles, slow and powerful swimming… Our neighbors, two walruses, patrol tirelessly, approach the glass, sniff, turn a flipper, and glide away smoothly. Half-immersed, our igloo-shaped lodge sets a polar scene — without the bite of the cold — and creates a feeling of a cocoon suspended between ice floe and waking dream.
The Observed Animal
The giants of the Arctic ice have this childlike yet majestic mix: quivering mustaches, self-assured curiosity, and marathon-like endurance. They come, go, return: interaction happens in the glances and movements. Around 10 o’clock, just before opening to the public, the little theater picks up speed during feeding: fish sprouting, sharp turns, unabashed gluttony — and we, privileged spectators, with a coffee in hand, our eyes glued to the glass.
The Degree of Immersion
The Walrus Rooms offer the most spectacular immersion: the glass bay window plunges the room into action, as if we lived in an aquarium. Around, the Land of Cold unfolds its Nordic ambiance. In the other lodges, proximity to bears, tigers, or penguins exists, but depends more on the mood, appetite, or nap times of the animals. No wonder these six rooms are in high demand, often fully booked months in advance.
Reflection on Our Adventure
Although in Belgium, the park serves as a perfect getaway for residents of Hauts-de-France: from Lille, a small hour drive and you are in a parallel world. The nine worlds (jungle, savanna, poles, etc.) are discovered as one flips through the pages of a living atlas, between stunning architectural reconstructions (African villages, Indian and Chinese temples) and rides on an authentic steam train. The directions are clear, and the walk generous. The only downside: the vastness of the site and the crowds sometimes sway towards an amusement park atmosphere. The announcement of a large tropical greenhouse and a planned water park around 2026 enhances this feeling of “always more” — everyone will have to decide if it’s a plus… or a too much.
The Additional Activity
The lodge stay does not include activities, but the Animal Adventures offer feeding workshops (giraffes, seals, reptiles, spider monkeys, tapirs). We joined a small group to meet Oliver, a giraffe who arrived in 2018, alongside a passionate caregiver. A delightful price: €8.50 per person for an informative, tactile immersion, giving the impression of peeking into the daily lives of the residents. For an even more exclusive dive, the option Keeper for a Day opens the backstage for an entire day: €231 for residents, €285 for others.
Pro Tips
Set the alarm, have an early breakfast, and enjoy privileged access at 9 a.m. — an hour before the day visitors — when the paths are still calm, and the animals are more active. In the evening, some areas remain accessible 24/7 for residents, perfect for a discreet “good evening” to your neighbors. The Pairi Daiza mobile app helps plan your route, find schedules, food spots, and information about the species. And if walking wears you out, numerous snack points are scattered throughout the park.
At the Heart of Pairi Daiza, the Largest Zoo in Europe
The park spans 75 hectares and houses 7500 animals among 800 species of birds, mammals, fish, and reptiles. Nine thematic universes create a motionless journey that can be explored on foot or by steam train. To prolong the wonder, the Pairi Daiza Resort features 121 immersive accommodations resembling mountain chalets, sailing cabins, or hobbit houses — and some, like the Full Moon Lodges, open the window to brown bears and wolves.
Sleeping Closest to the Ice Giants
Our igloo in the Land of Cold rivals in magic: light materials, soft lines, and the sensation of being glued to the glass of a secret world. The contact with the walruses is made without noise, in the rhythm of their comings and goings. Elsewhere in the park, some lodges are close to Siberian tigers, others to bears or seals. The charm lies as much in the animal proximity as in the drama of the settings — a total interlude, literally at the water’s edge.
Eating and Moving
The package includes half-board. In the evening, head to the all-you-can-eat buffet at Izba or the three-course meal at Mökki (menu decided at booking). The buffet shines with its variety and constant replenishment, and the breakfast is well-suited for the kilometers to be covered afterward. During the day, the “grab-and-go” solution works wonders thanks to kiosks throughout the park. Note: while no meals are served in the room, some lodges have a kitchenette to play chef in private.
Comfort and Services
Here, the standard follows suit: most categories offer a hot tub and a walk-in shower, a complimentary minibar, a coffee machine, and a welcome gift (chocolates, snacks, notebook…). The soundproofing is exemplary, the areas from 27 to 90 m² are perfect for families, and luggage is taken care of upon arrival (delivered to the room by 3 p.m.) until departure. All of this in a park where you can move from the roar of a tiger to the tranquility of a temple in just a few steps.
How Much Does It Cost?
The variety of accommodations corresponds with a wide price range. The entry-level The Farmhouse Lodge starts at around €166 per person based on two adults and two children (about €700 for the group), and prices vary with the season (low, medium, high, very high during school holidays). Regardless of the lodge, the 2 days / 1 night package includes park access from arrival day to departure day, early access at 9 a.m., a reserved parking, and half-board. Short Getaways to Extend the Escape
After a polar night, other journeys invite themselves to the agenda: sweet dolce vita dreams with a selection of charming villages in Italy, spicy getaway in the form of love hotels in France, medieval wandering in a city near Montpellier, cultural outing around the secrets of the Nîmes festival, or diving into another form of lengthy time with the 36,000-year-old art of the French gorges. The adventure, sometimes, begins with a window and mustaches; it continues with a ticket and a good pair of shoes.
