Lac de Vassivière, secret jewel of Limousin, combines hydroelectric power, art, and demanding, wild nature.
Born from a dike on the Maulde, the water body with labyrinthine shores unfolds forty-seven kilometers of winding paths.
Its peat bogs, heathlands, and coniferous forests create a living, fragile natural heritage that requires a respectful and curious approach.
Exceptional lake landscapes and peat bogs
Here, the experience combines panoramic hiking, discreet canoeing, and artistic stops at the International Center for Art and Landscape.
Contemporary art at the heart of an island
The route winds around the Chassagnas peninsula, grazes the island of Vauveix, and then opens towards the Limousin Mountains.
Hiking and canoeing in harmony
Main objective: to marry the pleasure of exploration, the conservation of biodiversity, and the enhancement of a lake territory with tortured shapes.
At the edges of the Millevaches plateau, this high-altitude enclave asserts its mountainous character against the western winds.
From Nergout and Vauveix, confidential water access opens secret coves for curious and patient visitors.

A mountain reservoir in the heart of Limousin
The Lac de Vassivière spreads its waters born from a dike on the Maulde, a lively tributary of the Vienne. This body of water, nearly ten square kilometers, is nestled in an abrupt, almost theatrical landscape. Between heathlands, gorse, and pastures, the mountain atmosphere seizes you from the very first steps. A lake with an untamed silhouette.
Relief at the edges of the Millevaches plateau, the “Limousin Mountains” lend their fresh air and clear horizons here. The raw dimensions deceive, as the shores seem sculpted, fractal, endlessly cut. The extended curves draw a labyrinth of coves, islands, and peninsulas, conducive to curious wandering.
A geography sculpted by water
Narrow peninsulas, hidden valleys, and wooded capes create a maze of forty-seven kilometers of shores. The maximum dimensions—five kilometers from west to east and four and a half from north to south—almost mislead. The lake changes its appearance with every turn, offering constantly renewed scenes.
Wild shores, heathlands, and peat bogs
Landscapes of conifers, heathers, and acidic ponds frame precious peat bogs, the ecological signature of the plateau. The Conservatory leads a landscape reconquest here, replacing some woodlands with grazing meadows. This dynamic reinstates discreet fauna and enriches visual contrasts, from tender greens to deep browns.
Light canoeing from the “ports” of Nergout or Vauveix on the southern shore, to brush against these wetland areas. The paddle glides towards the base of the Chassagnas peninsula, eastern side, after surpassing the island of Vauveix. Fragile peat bogs, respect required.
The Chassagnas peninsula, a panoramic balcony
Starting point between the hamlet of Masgrangeas and Chassagnas, at the parking area on the D3A2 road. Yellow markings in sight, the trail reaches the edge of the Pré Joli wood, then curves gently. A discreet fork on the right leads to a belvedere overlooking the dark wave.
Wooden footbridge below, direct access to the island of Vauveix, a tiny circle to walk around until returning to oneself. This island tour, however brief, leaves an almost playful sensation, deliciously incongruous. The round trip leads back to the belvedere, a pivotal point of the walk.
Ascending to the summit of the peninsula, a gentle ridge then a clear slope towards the western shore. The view first opens towards the wild east, then shifts to the west, side of the dam. A riverside path ultimately joins a wide road, calmly ascending back to the original parking area.
Arts and islands, other lakeside stops
The island of Vassivière houses a castle with a faux medieval appearance and the International Center for Art and Landscape. Together, they offer installations, exhibitions, and sensitive walks among granite, wood, and water. Contemporary art in nature.
Elegant footbridge between Chassagnas and the island of Vauveix, ideal for a contemplative step by the water’s edge. The port of Auphelle, near Peyrat-le-Château, brings together families and fishermen when the water level drops. Supervised swimming on sunny days, convenient water access, and a relaxed atmosphere.
Eastern part, the wildest soul
Slope of the puys de la Garde, la Croix, Soumeix, Broussas, and du Rocher in the background. Coniferous underbrush, low clearings, and granite beaches create an almost alpine scenography. The low lights sculpt the shapes, enhancing the mineral purity and the rustling of the grasses.
Soft paths on a needle-covered ground, narrow passages at water’s edge, a few rustic crossings. Experienced walkers savor the variety of textures, between gravel, peat, and mossy stumps. The walk becomes narrative, every turn leading to a new scene.
Practical advice and seasons
Local maps in pocket, gripping shoes, and a light windbreaker for sudden lakeside gusts. Marked routes are accessible, but elevation varies in the narrow valleys. Autumn lights reveal the heathlands, while summer lends itself to canoeing and swimming.
Respect for protected areas, soft stops on the promontories, subdued breaks at the edges of coves. Quiet navigation in canoe near the reeds, without direct approach to sensitive areas. Photographs with a telephoto lens preferred, to spare the shy wildlife.
