In 2023, the direct economic impact of the studied bicycle routes is estimated at 45.3 million euros. This amount illustrates not only the growing enthusiasm of the French for cycling but also the economic potential that this activity offers to the region. Indeed, nearly 93% of the generated revenue comes from tourists’ spending, whether for accommodation, dining, or local shops.

Over the last decade, cyclotourism has transformed into an increasingly popular leisure activity among the French. Approximately 22 million people report biking for leisure, thus enhancing the appeal of cycling tourist destinations. Normandy, with its varied landscapes and cultural riches, is positioning itself as one of the preferred locations for cyclists, attracting both families and adventurers.
Funding to develop infrastructures
The French government has also recognized this enthusiasm by unlocking a budget of 2 billion euros by 2027 to support local communities in creating cycling paths and suitable amenities.
