The Motown Museum in Detroit, Michigan, is expanding once again

Located in the heart of Detroit, the Motown Museum is about to undergo a major transformation with the expansion of its facilities. After an ambitious expansion project, the museum unveils its plans to add an impressive 40,000 square feet to its historic premises. Scheduled for the summer of 2026, this initiative aims to enhance the visitor experience and celebrate the musical legacy of Motown.

An ambitious expansion project

The cost of this new phase of expansion has been revised to $65 million, a figure that is up from initial forecasts. This increase reflects the scope and importance of this project for the city of Detroit. The new building, which will be constructed just behind the famous Hitsville U.S.A., the home that once housed the offices of Motown Records, promises to be a true architectural gem.

A tribute to the music legends

The initial sketches of the new museum reveal a stunning entrance hall, adorned with gold details and striking portraits of Motown icons such as Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and Diana Ross. This sumptuous décor will create an immersive and festive atmosphere, paying tribute to the musical history that has shaken Detroit and the world.

An enriched experience for visitors

Upon completion, the renovated museum will feature a state-of-the-art theater, which will be generously sponsored by Ford. This venue will serve as a platform for various events and presentations, further enriching the visitor experience. The new exhibition halls will be equipped with modern interactive devices, allowing fans to engage more deeply with the legacy of Motown.

Motown memorabilia at your fingertips

Visitors will also have the opportunity to explore a unique souvenir shop, offering an array of exclusive memorabilia related to Motown. This will delight music enthusiasts while allowing them to take home a piece of musical history. Additionally, a dining area named Miss Lillie’s Motown Café will pay tribute to Lillie Hart, the cook at Hitsville, who nourished many artists during the glorious months of Motown.

A journey through time

This expansion is not just a simple enlargement, but also an opportunity to celebrate the very essence of Motown. By honoring its roots while offering contemporary experiences, the museum ensures that future generations can appreciate the music and culture that shaped an era. With this expansion, the Motown Museum establishes itself as an essential destination for any music and culture enthusiast.

Work already underway

The museum has already begun work with the first phase of its expansion, which consisted of the opening of Hitsville Next in 2021, a space dedicated to education and artist development. The second phase brought significant improvements to the Hitsville house and was completed in 2022, paving the way for this new ambitious step.
