As a significant event, it attracted hundreds of visitors, all eager to learn more about these fascinating remnants of the Middle Ages.

The Wealth of the Bastides of Lot-et-Garonne

The Lot-et-Garonne is renowned for its multitude of bastides, new towns built in the Middle Ages around a carefully planned development. A bastide is defined by its central square, covered passageways, and its municipal charter, offering residents a harmonious living environment. The very term bastide comes from the Occitan bastida, illustrating the cultural heritage of this region. Although the municipality of Monsempron-Libos is not one in the strict sense, it still participated in this cultural exchange by presenting itself as a charming medieval village.

A Promising Assessment for This First Edition

The feedback from the organizers of the bastides weekend has been very positive. Indeed, no less than 500 people participated in the various activities offered. Diverse workshops allowed visitors to get acquainted with traditional craft professions such as blacksmithing, lace-making, and wood sculpture. The Toucher du Bois association captivated the audience with its handcrafted creations, while visitors also indulged in delicious crepes.

Various Activities for Every Taste

The program also included an engaging conference on the bastides led by Pierre Simon, as well as a botanical trail directed by Daniel Loisy. These meetings allowed exploration of the richness of bastide heritage while offering an immersion in the surrounding nature. Furthermore, a much-anticipated treasure hunt sparked the interest of the curious. Although the start was a bit slower, the discovery pouch and riddles at 12€ engaged visitors in an adventure full of surprises. These activities demonstrated the growing enthusiasm for discovering the territory.

Cultural Outreach at the Heart of Fumélois

This bastides weekend was also an opportunity for the municipality of Fumel to position itself as a key player in tourism development in Nouvelle-Aquitaine. By strengthening the ties between tradition and modernity, this event highlighted not only the bastides but also the charming old town of Fumel itself, known for its pleasant and green living environment.
