Internet users were shocked to see an act considered a lack of respect for the spiritual and cultural significance of Machu Picchu.
Strengthening security measures
In response to this event, the authorities announced a strengthening of security measures at the site. The head of the Machu Picchu Archaeological Park, César Medina, emphasized the importance of increasing surveillance. This includes installing additional cameras and deploying a greater number of guards to ensure the safety of visitors and preserve the integrity of the site. These measures also aim to prevent the wild scattering of human ashes, which could harm the site’s cleanliness.
An insufficient legislative framework
Currently, Peruvian legislation does not penalize the actions of scattering human ashes at historical sites like Machu Picchu. Mr. Medina mentioned that although the police were alerted, no complaint has been filed as it is difficult to accuse acts that are not clearly punishable under the law. However, the park management is committed to prohibiting such practices to ensure respect for the site and its visitors.
A significant tourist presence
Machu Picchu attracts an average of 5,600 visitors per day, making surveillance complex. Currently, the site has only four security cameras, a situation the authorities wish to improve. Moreover, the tourist influx presents a challenge in maintaining harmony between welcoming visitors and respecting local traditions and beliefs.
