IN BRIEF
|
The site of Machu Picchu, an emblem of Inca culture and a UNESCO World Heritage site, is facing a security crisis following a recent video showing a tourist scattering human ashes at this sacred place. In response to this situation, Peruvian authorities are implementing new security measures to prevent such incidents in the future while raising awareness among visitors about the issues related to the management of human ashes in such a valuable context.
A troubling event at Machu Picchu
The proliferation of social networks has allowed the spread of a controversial video, where a woman was seen releasing what appeared to be human ashes into the air. This gesture, shared on TikTok, has sparked a strong reaction in Peru and led to discussions about acceptable practices in this historical place of worship. Internet users were shocked to see an act considered a lack of respect for the spiritual and cultural significance of Machu Picchu.
Strengthening security measures
In response to this event, the authorities announced a strengthening of security measures at the site. The head of the Machu Picchu Archaeological Park, César Medina, emphasized the importance of increasing surveillance. This includes installing additional cameras and deploying a greater number of guards to ensure the safety of visitors and preserve the integrity of the site. These measures also aim to prevent the wild scattering of human ashes, which could harm the site’s cleanliness.
An insufficient legislative framework
Currently, Peruvian legislation does not penalize the actions of scattering human ashes at historical sites like Machu Picchu. Mr. Medina mentioned that although the police were alerted, no complaint has been filed as it is difficult to accuse acts that are not clearly punishable under the law. However, the park management is committed to prohibiting such practices to ensure respect for the site and its visitors.
A significant tourist presence
Machu Picchu attracts an average of 5,600 visitors per day, making surveillance complex. Currently, the site has only four security cameras, a situation the authorities wish to improve. Moreover, the tourist influx presents a challenge in maintaining harmony between welcoming visitors and respecting local traditions and beliefs.
Towards increased awareness
The new security measures will not simply be limited to increasing security personnel. They will also include efforts to raise awareness among visitors about the importance of respecting Peruvian culture and traditions. Information campaigns may be set up to explain why scattering human ashes in places like Machu Picchu is inappropriate, thereby reinforcing the respect owed to this historically charged site.
A respectful future for Machu Picchu
The current situation highlights the need to protect Machu Picchu not only as a tourist attraction but as a profound symbol of Inca cultural heritage. Efforts to combine enhanced security with visitor awareness will be crucial in ensuring that this sacred place remains a site of memory and respect.
