During the summer, a group of fifteen young people from Saint-Jean-de-Braye embarked on a memorable trip to Poland, rich in discoveries and emotions. Thoughtfully and collectively prepared, this journey focused on cultural discovery and memory duty, allowing participants to explore the dark pages of history while forging strong bonds. A look back at an unforgettable adventure that left its mark.

A meticulous preparation

The project, launched in autumn 2023 by Asca (Saint-Jean-de-Braye socio-cultural association), involved the young people in an eight-month preparation process. Participants, aged 15 to 19, mobilized around clear objectives: to understand the history of Poland through its memory-laden sites and to relay this experience to others. An initiative that demonstrates the commitment of young people to keep collective memory alive.

An immersive trip to Poland

After a twenty-seven-hour journey by train and bus, the young people arrived in Krakow, a vibrant city rich in history. Awed by the medieval architecture, they first visited the magnificent Wieliczka salt mine, an unmissable masterpiece listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The splendor of its galleries adorned with statues carved from salt left an indelible mark in their memories.

Memorable encounters

The trip did not stop there. The young people had the opportunity to visit the Schindler factory, which has been transformed into a museum, allowing them to delve into the tragic history of the Second World War. These moments of intense reflection were crucial for understanding the horrors of the past, reinforcing their historical awareness.

Auschwitz-Birkenau: A poignant visit

One of the highlights of the stay was undoubtedly the visit to the Auschwitz-Birkenau memorial and museum. With testimonies of a painful reality, the young people were confronted with a harsh historical reality that aroused strong emotions. “Intense, shocking, and very moving” were the words that often recurred in discussions after this visit, illustrating the power of the impressions received.

The return and the will to share

After their return to France, the young people gathered to produce a blog and a video to share their experience. This project aims to raise awareness among middle school students and to keep this memory alive across generations. The goal is clear: to testify and to prevent, ensuring that the mistakes of the past are never repeated.

An adventure that goes beyond the trip

The trip to Poland also served to strengthen the bonds between these young people, fostering rich exchanges and lasting friendships. By exploring Polish culture, discovering its nuances, flavors, and history, they returned transformed, with a true appreciation for cultural diversity and a keen awareness of significant events in world history.

The link between Saint-Jean-de-Braye and Poland is strengthened through these initiatives, allowing everyone to better understand the scope of history and the importance of civic engagement. This adventure foreshadows other projects to come, always with the desire to explore and share.
