A Promising Start #
Friday, January 31, 2025, marks an important milestone with the laying of the first stone of this new Tourist Office. The prefect of Aveyron was present for this symbolic event, emphasizing the significance of this installation for the region’s tourism development. This project, planned for over ten years, represents a major investment of nearly 2.5 million euros, supported by public partners such as the region, the department, and the State.
An Interpretation and Immersion Space #
This new Tourist Office will be much more than just an information point. It will offer a consultation space showcasing the riches of twelve municipalities, as well as a vast 200 m² interpretation and immersion area. Jean-Marie Lacombe, president of the community of municipalities, noted that this space will provide a better understanding of the landscape, culture, and heritage of the region, addressing themes such as geology, local know-how, and built heritage. This represents a real opportunity for school groups and visitors seeking authenticity.
A Benefit for the Territory’s Attractiveness #
This new facility is designed to address the welcome issues faced by the current Tourist Office, which, despite its charm, lacks functionality. The project is supported by various political figures, demonstrating the strategic importance of this new office. Claire Chauffour-Rouillard, representing the State, expressed her support for this project, calling it “ambitious and sustainable.” She also emphasized that this location would be up to par with the increasing influx and notoriety of Conques.
Towards the Grand Site de France label #
Conques attracts nearly 500,000 visitors each year, making this village the second most visited tourist site in the region, just behind the Millau Viaduct. With the prospect of obtaining the Grand Site de France label, the municipality hopes to boost its tourist attendance by 30%, joining iconic sites such as the Pont du Gard and the Marais poitevin. The mayor of Conques-en-Rouergue also mentioned several recent investments in enhancing heritage, such as improvements to the treasure of Conques and the forecourt of the abbey.
A Dedicated Team at the Service of the Territory #
The creation of this new Tourist Office is the result of relentless work by the existing team, under the leadership of Régine Combal. While the prefect discovered the village, team members focused on upcoming projects, anticipating the arrival of the first pilgrims as early as March. This new structure aims to be a place for meetings and exchanges, prepared to welcome the influx of visitors that is expected.
