Internship in Spain: The practical guide to obtaining your NIE

In order to carry out an internship in Spain, it is important to take certain documents into consideration. The consultant in charge of your internship search will guide you through these steps in order to obtain your NIE.

This document is required by the Spanish Social Security Administration so that foreigners are free to move, work, study, buy or do anything in Spain. This document will make them legal residents in Spain. It is very important for carrying out several operations (opening a bank account, subscribing to a telephone subscription, etc.). We remind you that this document is mandatory to start an internship or job, so it is imperative to obtain it quickly.

NIE (Foreigner Identification Number)

There are two types of NIE. You can get an NIE “number” or an NIE “card”. An NIE number is simply a number written on a piece of paper. The NIE card, on the other hand, is a small green card that will allow you to complete all the paperwork necessary for your daily life in Spain.

NUMBER DENIED:

  • Number consisting of a letter at the beginning, 7 digits and a letter at the end (eg: Y-4683418-S), written on a sheet of white paper.
  • Possibility of obtaining this number in person or by proxy.
  • Assigned for administrative purposes.
  • No need for proof of address.
  • Request it by completing form EX15.

CARD DENIED:

  • Green paper card laminated on the back.
  • Contains the NIE number, your name, your date and place of birth, your address in Spain and the date of application.
  • Necessary for stays longer than 3 months.
  • NIE application possible only in person (Only by appointment in Barcelona).
  • The validity of the NIE card is unlimited.
  • Request it by completing form EX18.

The NIE card is only granted if you meet one of the following conditions (for EU citizens):

  • Have a job with a Spanish employer.
  • Be self-employed (autonomo).
  • Be a student and have health insurance.
  • Have sufficient funds to meet your needs.
  • Join a family member already living in Spain.

DOCUMENTS TO BRING FOR THE NIE

  • Proof of appointment (Cita previa), on paper.
  • Signed internship agreement (in Spanish) or original certificate from the host company stating that you will do an internship.
  • European health insurance card + photocopy.
  • Passport or identity card + photocopy.
  • Form EX-15 or Form EX-18 (Complete in capital letters and black pen or complete the form on computer).
  • Model 790 filled.
  • Before your appointment for the NIE, you will need to bring the Model 790 and pay the tax in cash (9.84€ and 2.16€ extra if you want the green card) at a Sabadell bank. The bank will give you a receipt that you must present to the police station in order to definitively obtain the NIE.
