Off the coast of Tuscany lies a natural treasure, as fascinating as it is inaccessible: the island of Montecristo. Made mythical by Alexandre Dumas’s novel and carefully protected by Italy, this rocky island arouses all desires. Yet, only the most patient – and lucky – will one day tread its steep paths, as requests explode and access remains a quest that is almost epic where patience is the most precious key.
The island of Montecristo, lost in the heart of the Tyrrhenian Sea, is one of Tuscany’s most secret jewels. Known for its legendary history and immortalized by Alexandre Dumas, this island fascinates travelers and nature enthusiasts like never before. Yet, getting there is akin to an obstacle course: with ultra-limited visiting slots, strict environmental protection, and years of waiting to hope to set foot on this wild territory, visiting Montecristo becomes a true quest where only the most persevering are rewarded.
A natural jewel under high protection
Rising like a granite fortress over 10 km², the island of Montecristo is part of the Tuscan archipelago and boasts an absolutely unique natural heritage. Since 1971, it has proudly held the title of “state natural reserve,” along with the invaluable status of “biosphere reserve” and sanctuary for marine mammals. One could say that Montecristo is not entered like an amusement park. The island is hermetically protected, accessible only from a tiny cove, Cala Maestra, the sole entry point for the few boats allowed to dock there.
Legends and treasures: the myth of Montecristo
Famous worldwide thanks to the novel by Alexandre Dumas, which places the legendary treasure of Abbé Faria here, Montecristo is shrouded in mystery. But fiction meets reality: the magic of the place is not only literary; it is palpable at every rock, in every cave. According to local legend, it was San Mamiliano who, after escaping from slavery, found refuge there and named the island “Mons Christi,” thus giving it its current name. It is even said that the saint faced a winged dragon there, whose blood caused a spring of pure water to flow… Enough to pique the imagination of all those who dream of walking on its paths.
A preserved biodiversity… and fiercely controlled
In lieu of a treasure to unearth, visitors discover a “loot” that is very much alive: hundreds of wild goats, mouflons, snakes, and a rich avifauna. All around, an exceptional natural aquarium, also protected, makes any unauthorized approach impossible. The island usually welcomes only scientists and two resident guardians, living in the only villa built in the 19th century by an eccentric English lord. On land, cameras watch over every cove, ready to capture the slightest intruder. Collecting a pebble or dipping a toe in the water is prohibited; here, every action leaves a trace, so discretion is imperative.
Reservations, quotas, and extreme patience
Reaching Montecristo
is about accepting a true test of patience. With only 1725 visitors allowed per year, one must expect an average of three years of waiting to obtain the precious ticket. Reservations are made between March 1 and April 15, then from May 15 to October 31. There is a complete pause in the heart of spring, when migratory fauna needs tranquility. About twenty departures are offered from Piombino via the island of Elba, and two from Porto Santo Stefano via Giglio Porto. The excursions, limited to groups of 75 people, cost around 140 euros per person, including the journey and companionship by forest guides dressed like adventurers.
The physical challenge and rarity: an adventure reserved for the most tenacious
Once landed, it will be necessary to swap sandals for proper hiking boots. The island challenges sporty legs with four main trails leading to heights flirting with 600 meters above sea level – the most challenging path requires 3 hours and 30 minutes of walking and an elevation gain of over 460 meters. It is no surprise that there are twenty times more requests than available spots! The time slots are so coveted that each visit is experienced as a rare event, a unique adventure. Coming to Montecristo is to indulge in the ultimate luxury of wild nature, but only if one has patience… and breath!
