An Unprecedented Sensory Journey at the Heart of Abstraction
The Villa Carmignac, on the bright island of Porquerolles, hosts a unique exhibition this summer: “Vertigo.” Conceived by Matthieu Poirier, it brings together about fifty works giving a voice to fierce abstract artists who explore perceptions. Carried by the magic of the place – between salty sprays, the songs of the mistral, and the bursts of Mediterranean sunlight – “Vertigo” offers a subtle dialogue between wild nature and artistic creation. What truly remains of the natural landscape? Rather than representing the image of the landscape, the exhibition cultivates its impression, intensity, and sometimes its disturbance.
Six Universes for Six Journeys
The path of “Vertigo” consists of six parts, a true sensory mosaic: the aquatic, the cosmological, the aerial, the infinite, the terrestrial, and the abyssal. Each plays with contrasting atmospheres and enveloping installations: swinging mobiles, games of shadow and light, breathtaking panoramic paintings… One literally vibrates in front of the color with Yves Klein, one floats through cosmic landscapes with Olafur Eliasson or Hans Hartung, one lets oneself dissolve in the troubled depths of Gerhard Richter or Helen Frankenthaler, and one explores new optical horizons thanks to Ann Veronica Janssens and Otto Piene. Ready to challenge the laws of perception?
Unpublished Works and Exceptional Artists
Visitors can admire over fifty works, coming from the Carmignac Collection, exceptional loans from museums and international institutions, as well as creations specially designed for the occasion. Among the featured artists are: James Turrell, Jesus Rafael Soto, Anna-Eva Bergman, Caroline Corbasson, and many others. Their proposals offer a true immersion at the edge of illusion, where your gaze wanders as much as your mind elevates. To prolong the magic of artistic discovery, also explore other fascinating exhibitions such as the one on traditions and modernity in Osaka or discover new horizons with the treasures of Great Falls.
A Summer Program Full of Surprises
The foundation also caters to your festive and cultural desires throughout the summer. On the menu: artistic workshops for both children and parents, night events every Thursday until 10 PM to discover the works in changing light, outdoor cinema screenings showing Cool Sweats, Gravity, The Big Blue, or The Summit of the Gods. Full moon nights invite a blend of contemplation and artistic performances, and a sound journey delves into the heart of the gardens through Soundwalk Collective. For travel and fresh produce lovers, take a gourmet break on this flavor-filled page, or embark on a visit to the Vallon Pont d’Arc to extend the getaway.
When Art Resonates with Nature
The exhibition “Vertigo” transcends mere contemplation by offering a total, immersive, and sometimes bewildering experience. It invites you to feel the vertigo – that tipping point where nature, becoming abstraction, makes us lose our footing to better amaze us. Between disorientation, floating, and dazzlement, this artistic adventure gives you a unique opportunity to (re)discover how a landscape is experienced more than it is observed… The entire program can be found on the Carmignac Foundation website.
