Ah, Biarritz in summer! Its majestic cliffs, its Instagrammable sunset over the Côte des Basques… and its somewhat chaotic scenes where swimmers, surfers, and lifeguards compete for the foam. Amid the growing commotion, incivilities, and small dangers that sneak between the waves, even a simple swim sometimes turns into an extreme sport, on one of the most elegant French beaches.
Biarritz, jewel of the Basque Coast, attracts a colorful crowd of vacationers each summer eager for sea spray, wild surfing, and magnetic sunsets. But behind this summer postcard lies a much more tumultuous reality: the staggering increase in visitors has turned the simple bath into an adventure that can sometimes be risky, against a backdrop of tensions and incivilities on the mythical Côte des Basques. Lifeguards are omnipresent, conflicts arise between surfers and swimmers, and invisible dangers lurk: summer in Biarritz promises to be just as boiling off the water as in the waves.
The Tumultuous Summer of Biarritz: Crowds in Search of Freshness
Biarritz has never vibrated so much. Every day, up to 7,000 people venture onto one of the most renowned beaches in France, the Côte des Basques. Between eager surfers and bathers seeking a bit of respite under the sun, the atmosphere is electrifying – sometimes even overheated. At dusk, smartphones in hand, tourists immortalize the panorama while the lifeguards remain vigilant. While the beauty of the site is undeniable, its new status as a “place to be” is not without creating some ripples in the daily routine of the security teams.
When Risks Exceed the Wave
The tragic incident of July 8 still resonates: a seasoned lifeguard, out to enjoy his evening on a foil, was found in cardio-respiratory arrest in front of Villa Belza, a victim of the treacherous Atlantic current. Even the vigilance of professionals is not always enough to ward off danger. The strong currents, at the beginning of summer, surprise even the regulars and remind everyone that the ocean, as beautiful as it is, is never fully tamed.
Enhanced Surveillance, but Not Foolproof
To try to curb this effervescence, the town hall is deploying significant resources: 58 lifeguards, 4 CRS officers, 2 jet-ski pilots cover the six beaches of Biarritz, with a budget commensurate with the stakes (€700,000 per year). However, the morphology of the Côte des Basques, stretching 800 meters and surrounded by cliffs, makes the mission Herculean. The arrival of a new lookout tower attempts to address the recent natural expansion of the southern beach, which has become a highly sought-after spot. But more is needed to control the human tide that gathers there.
Lack of Civility: A Surprise Guest of the Summer
Those dreaming of tranquility by the Atlantic would do well to revise their plans. Between bathers venturing outside monitored areas and surfers zigzagging in disregard of the rules, the lifeguards play the role of mediators every day, as they cannot enforce the law like their CRS counterparts. Incivilities are gaining ground, sometimes relegating prevention to the status of rhetoric in the salty wind. The situation necessitates a call to the municipal police, which is not always available in the moment. Meanwhile, tempers flare under the Basque sun.
Surf Schools: Between Passion and Tension
With about twenty surf schools (half of which are at the Côte des Basques alone!), the beach sometimes resembles an aquatic playground. Although the monitored area is adjusted based on crowd size, sharing the space inevitably turns into a battle, especially with the increasing number of beginners who are learning to surf often without a real understanding of safety rules. These latter, renting a board for a handful of euros, sometimes find themselves catapulted into a ballet of foam and hazards.
Swimming in Turbulent Zones: When Surfing Without a Leash Reigns
Culmination of a chaotic summer: the trend of surfing without a leash (that little yet precious link that prevents the board from flying away at the slightest fall) makes a grand return. In the 1970s, it was the norm. Today, it becomes a headache for lifeguards, as boards left to their own devices create panic in swimming areas. Several testimonies from frustrated swimmers remind us that a lost board can turn a swim into a risky session. Even the beachside well-being is no longer, it must be admitted, fully guaranteed.
