One hour from Lyon, the Loire unfolds a vast playground for a 100% kids family weekend. Between fresh air in the Pilat Regional Natural Park, a creative city trip in Saint-Étienne, wellness breaks and fun farms in Forez, and a gentle bike ride in the Roannais along the Véloire, each stop promises challenges, discoveries, and real moments of togetherness. Treasure hunts, canicross, mine galleries, design workshops, acrobatic nets, electric buggies, treehouses, escape games at the castle… Here, the “matrus” (children, in gaga) take priority, and you will be smiling from ear to ear.
Weekend around Lyon: beautiful views, fresh air, and adventure games in the Pilat massif
Day 1 – Secret peat bog, carnivorous plants, and Nordic dogs
Heading to the high plateaus of Pilat, above Saint-Étienne. At the sources of the Dunerette, the site of Gimel reveals a mysterious peat bog where one walks on wooden walkways, explorer-style. The children play at “taming” nature by searching for droséras, these sparkling carnivorous plants that prefer to munch on insects rather than the fingers of the curious. Between the treasure map and small clever challenges, your tribe turns into “appinche-moriet” (a lynx eye, in gaga) to solve all the puzzles.
Pause for local cuisine with crunchy râpées in Saint-Genest-Malifaux, then back to the great outdoors for a canicross on the ridges. Gently harnessed to brave huskies, the children love to be pulled along the paths. At dusk, the walk with headlamps provides gentle thrills, with an Halloween atmosphere guaranteed.
For the night, head to a farm-inn where homemade pork products and a family lodge write the story in the countryside. The “home-like” welcome and the picnic of farm products the next day is a winning duo for holidays near Lyon.
Day 2 – Panoramic ruins, acrobatics in nets, and old-fashioned candies
Set out on the path of the ruins of Montchal via the Crêt de Chirol and its chirats (volcanic debris), then race towards the Croix de Joanabel where the famous “Bathtub of the Gauls” stands. Perhaps remnants, but above all, XXL views of the Jura, the Dauphiné, and, on clear days, the Alps.
Want to let off some steam? Head to the aerial nets at the Parcabout Alti’Fil in Burdignes for a grand time of gentle climbing and suspended laughter. Before heading back down, a tasty stop at La Fabrique de Julien in Bourg-Argental: old-fashioned candies, fluffy marshmallows, fruit jellies… enough to revive the older ones and the “jarjilles” with boundless energy.
Road tip: If you’re heading south, take the Col de la République (also known as Grand Bois, 1,169 m). Fewer traffic jams, more landscapes, and a great excuse to extend discoveries in this sporty territory that quickly makes you… gaga!
Saint-Étienne and the Loire Gorges: design city trip and nature
Day 1 – In the shoes of a miner and a budding designer
The history of Saint-Étienne unfolds at the Parc-Musée du Puits Couriot. After the hanging room, experience the descent to the depths, helmets on, with wagons and roaring machines included. The children can even lift a jackhammer (without shaking the city, promise). In the open air, the green crassiers become a playground for sliding and imagination.
Then hop on the green tram to the City of Design, amidst bricks, metal, and glass. Lunch at La Fabuleuse Cantine around an anti-waste burger that is as clever as it is delicious. Then stop at La Cabane du design: mini-machines to make a cup, aquaponics basin, and the story of the fish “Bidule” that wonderfully talks about ecology to children. End the day with an urban treasure hunt to discover the design gems of “Sainté”.
For the night, choose a Pop Art loft and let yourself be challenged by the arcade machine. Between Pac-Man and cracking vinyls, the retro vibe enchants both young and old.
Day 2 – Nature reserve, breathtaking meanders, and funny neighbors
30 minutes from the center, the Loire Gorges Nature Reserve unfolds its cliffs, woods, and watercolor viewpoints. Above the meanders, the Victor restaurant offers a “postcard” panorama of the Camaldules hamlet, the Grangent Dam, and the Essalois Castle. On the trail, listen for the yellow-bellied toad, look for the stag beetle, watch for the black kite, and at dusk, the discreet Eurasian eagle-owl. A total disconnection just steps from Lyon.
Meet in Forez: wellness, fun farms, and electric buggy
Day 1 – Sensory trail, popcorn party, and swincar
In the medieval site of Salt-en-Donzy, take off your shoes on a sensory trail to awaken your feet: pebbles, “babets” (pine cones), and wild herbs. The gardens reveal dye and medicinal plants in autumn colors. At noon, enjoy at l’Assiette Saltoise.
In the afternoon, head to La Ferme aux Délices foréziens in Saint-Cyr-les-Vignes. Here, we turn milk into creamy ice creams, talk about agroecology, observe biodiversity, collect corn, and… pop popcorn! The older ones get behind the wheel of an electric all-terrain swincar that winds between fields and hedges.
Day 2 – Chalets on water, family spa, and Halloween crumble
Stay at the Domaine de Veauchette in charming stilted chalets amidst the ponds. Upon waking, fish from the balcony: carp, tench, perch, roach, pike, or even catfish for the most patient.
Relaxing morning at the Spa les Iléades in Montrond-les-Bains. Then head to a teaching farm to cook a to-die-for crumble with butternut, grind flour with old coffee mills, bottle-feed lambs, and give food to the goats. Beware: after that, you will call your children “my pillot” (chick) or “my belou” (lamb). The gaga is contagious!
Recommended quick stop in Saint-Galmier to fill a bottle at the sparkling Badoit spring (1 liter max). Joyful bubbles guaranteed.
The Roannais in slow mode: character villages, easy biking, and thrills at the castle
Day 1 – The Véloire, greenway for families and stop at Charlieu
From the marina of Roanne, the Véloire travels along a secure greenway, perfect with children. After a break in Briennon, follow the banks of the Loire towards Pouilly-sous-Charlieu: herons, egrets, and sometimes, the trace of a woodworking beaver. We then cross the bridge of Sornin, signed Gustave Eiffel, to reach Charlieu, classified as a Character Village. Half-timbered houses, Benedictine abbey, and a treasure hunt via an app to explore while having fun.
A little chilly? We treat ourselves to a scarf at the Tissages de Charlieu. For a snack, stop by Pralus to munch on a Praluline, the star brioche with pink pralines. At nightfall, sleep in wooden cabins high up in the Côte Roannaise, illuminated by candles, for a true return to nature.
Day 2 – Panoramic vélorail and Château de la Roche in investigation mode
A vigorous morning on the vélorail at Commelle-Vernay with views of the Villerest Lake and the Monts de la Madeleine. In the afternoon, head to the Château de la Roche in Saint-Priest-la-Roche. When the Loire waters drop in autumn, the rocky peak takes on a Scottish look; the rest of the year, it seems to float. Inside, dive into 1900 with a theatrical visit, then it’s time for escape games: “evil spirits” to chase away or “flood alert” to avert. In the evening, thrills guaranteed with a special Murder Party for Halloween.
